Let me begin my review by saying that I will never, ever dine at this restaurant ever again.
I have been a long time patron of Wonder Seafood, and have gone to Wonder Seafood countless times since 2016. There are not many authentic Chinese dim sum places near where I live (around an hour from Edison), so I was always willing to make the drive.
I do my best to support small businesses and restaurants, as they have been undoubtedly hit hard the last few years. I am not hard to please when it comes to food.
However, several incidents and experiences in the last 6 months at this restaurant have changed my mind.
First, I want to preface my criticism by saying that I recently got what had to be severe food poisoning after dining there this past Friday, November 25, 2022.
I happen to have developed a somewhat recent sensitivity to MSG, which I suspect has been added to the dim sum dishes as of late. Of course, how would I know?
Well, this is the sickest I’ve been in years, and I rarely get sick to the point where I have had to go on bed rest and be virtually incapacitated for the whole day.
It certainly seems that the staff is averse to having labels on their meals, and certainly averse to having non-Chinese speaking customers at their establishment.
The last few times that I have dined there, I have had to ask repeatedly for peanuts, hot tea, and just service in general. It always seemed like it was a burden to the waiters and waitresses to bring me those basic items. Some of them seemed to even roll their eyes at me.
Furthermore, there are fruit flies at the restaurant, and the bathroom has become unclean.
During the most recent time that I went, I noticed the staff looking at me, seemingly snickering at me, and then saying something in Mandarin to each other.
Do not give this place your business. The quality of the food has seriously declined, and I suspect that the meat is of dubious quality. I would not even be surprised if the oil in which the dishes are fried is reused or dirty.
Lastly, echoing some of the other reviews, I really have no way of knowing if I was ever over charged for a meal. I would routinely spend $40-$60 at this restaurant, but will not go there again.
There are a multitude of other restaurants to eat at that will treat you much better. I’ve never had the same type of experience at Mongolian Hot Pot and many of the other...
Read moreLast night my son, future daughter in-law and I had a wonderful experience and meal at Wonder Seafood. We travel there separately and were on a tight schedule because we were attending the Wisconsin/Rutgers volleyball game after dinner. As I arrived first and asked my son to give me a ten minute heads up on their arrival. I was immediately seated even though our full party wasn’t there and provided with a pot of tea. I explained to the head waiter that I’d be ordering appetizers when I got the 10 minute heads up from my son. He immediately brought over the dim sum menu for me to peruse. This restaurant had originally been recommended by a former colleague who grew up in Hong Kong over twenty years ago. I had frequently it nearly weekly with groups from work and it was always a first choice for family meals when in town. Have not been there since my retirement 5 years ago and had heard it was under new management,so what a delight to find the food and service better than ever. At the ten minute warning I put in our appetizer order with the caveat that if they didn’t show I would eat it all myself. While waiting I perused the main menu and was concerned when I couldn’t find some old favorites. When my party arrived and we settled in after bathroom breaks our piping hot appetizers were delivered to the table. While enjoying them I’d asked my son to try and find some of our old favorites on the new menu but he had no luck either. When the head waiter came over to take our order we told him what we had hoped to order but couldn’t find them on the menu. We described them to him and he said he understood what we wanted and put in the order. We were just finishing up the appetizers when the main courses arrived. They were exactly what we had wanted and they were the best versions of them I’ve ever had! Previously it was a running joke with previous management that it was damn near impossible to get the bill when you were ready to leave and you had to take it up to the counter to pay. Last night they took it at the table and we finished the transaction before we finished our complimentary orange slices. Made to the game in time to sit in great seats and enjoyed every minute. This is my first time reviewing any restaurant but I felt compelled to after such a great experience. Wonder Seafood is even a greater...
Read moreWe have passed Wonder Seafood numerous times, and we've noticed the number of cars parked in the lot. It was not until a friend recommended it that we chose to dine at Wonder Seafood. We love seafood, and we were told Wonder Seafood had a great selection and excellent preparation, so we were excited about our choice. We arrived early for dinner on a Sunday afternoon, and we were advised that the kitchen was being cleaned. Our waiter was very professional, and carefully explained the items on the menu, and made several suggestions. We took a few minutes to relax, and then our entrées we're served, followed by our appetizer. We found this a bit odd, but this has happened before in Asian restaurants, where things come to your table as they are finished, not in the order of appetizer, soup, entree, etc.. My wife had the Wonder Seafood seafood platter house special, which she enjoyed. I had a scallop dish, but I could not explain that I was looking for a scallop dish that I saw in the online menu. My dish was quite tasty. Midway through dinner our appetizer, scallion pancakes, was delivered: these were excellent. Altogether, the food was very good. Service was a bit spotty. The waiter who took our order was excellent. Later another waiter came by, but he seemed put out by our request for water, and when my wife asked for soy sauce he appeared very displeased. Shortly thereafter we had a most pleasant woman as a waitress. I'm not quite sure why there are a number of staff for one table, but we ascribed this to being early. Perhaps we were just clueless. Wonder Seafood was very clean, parking adequate and convenient. Although we did not take advantage of it, Wonder Seafood is BYO. We were assured that seafood was very fresh, but several dead fish in the tanks as you come in made us wonder. All in all we enjoyed Wonder Seafood. Judging by the number of Asian customers, it is well regarded. Whether it was the time of our visit or that we were just clueless, it seemed that we were not their target diner. We're planning to go back, guessing that the more we know the more we will enjoy...
