A shining star of the mid-valley dining scene, Hominy Southern Kitchen isn't in danger of having an identity crisis like many of its neighbors. They know exactly who they are. The menu is deliberate, straightforward and intentional. This is southern comfort food cooked with culinary prowess, without the worry of being perceived as "elevated." It just simply is.
I had the pleasure of dining with family who are not afraid to share plates. Lucky me, as four entrees and three appetizers all earned top marks and eye rolls of satisfaction from this food obsessed weirdo. The sides are left to remain satisfying and beautiful in their simplicity, without being over-cluttered by ingredients. Their "el jebel" hot fried chicken will scratch that Nashville itch and satiate any aficionado of the genre.
A charming interior and well decorated patio go hand in hand with their warm and impeccable service. Prices remain high but on par with the neighborhood, yet not egregiously high like many of the spots in SoDoSoPa across the highway. Hominy Southern Kitchen is quite simply among the best places to eat in the area, just by being quite simple...and delicious. Don't...
Read moreA very tasty new hot spot in the valley. I don’t think I’m the only one the read it’s most recent newspaper review - the word is out!!! Sharing some Chattanooga, TN and other coincidental southern roots with the chef - I had to try it. Punchline, it was great. I had the gumbo, fried chicken, collards, and chocolate chip cookies. All were just great - chef put out the fried chicken vibe - and did not disappoint, excellent, cooked perfectly - I’d like to see a pinch more salt and seasoning, but that probably just me. Overall - Chef did not have a heavy hand with seasoning and spices or salt. Gumbo … more stuff than roux, and all good! Collards, really great - simple, and those who don’t like salty foods, Chef pulled off collards and ham and not salty - somehow!!! Chocolate chip cookies were simple like hone made and tasty - *they accidentally gave me I think shrimp and grits? I thought it was my gumbo - but wasn’t - but it was good.. Place was cute, nicely done new - good looking locals crowd - noisy - crowded - get a reservation. A great place - simple menu - fair prices - a delicious new treat yo the community!!! Go and enjoy -...
Read moreSoutherner here who has had the pleasure of partaking in potlucks all across Mississippi and Arkansas. The service was excellent, and everyone in my group will definitely return. The drinks were great--Old Fashioned, Gin and Tonic, and a Coffee Martini. The shrimp and grits and gumbo were excellent. The roux was perfect. The pickled fried green tomatoes were delicious--breading was just right. Meatloaf was soooo good. I highly recommend. I appreciated the slightly different spin on the slaw. A little spicy, not too heavy on the sauce, and zero sweetness outside of the cabbage. With all due respect, though, after trying the fried chicken, I may have to burn my boots for fear I've walked on Yankee soil. The chicken was moist and tender, but the crust needs a serious intervention. Same for the "biscuits." The gravy was on the thinner side but still flavorful. We all shared a flourless chocolate dessert. If you like chocolate, order this dessert. I thought my husband was going to lick the bowl. Would love to see bread pudding on the dessert menu. This place is one of my new favorites...
