I will tell you the good and the bad from my visit -- the Good: The Gentleman at the drivethru was extremely professional and friendly. He is also the same person who answered my phone call when I called to ask questions. The Bad: I ordered 2 things - a sausage wrap and a chopped beef sandwich. Disclaimer: I am a 50 year old native Austinite so I know how BBQ is supposed to be. And a "Sausage Wrap" needs to be on a tortilla, not a plain piece of white bread that desintegrates and is disgustingly soggy when you put BBQ sauce on it. Truly, as a Texan I am offended that they would even try to call it a wrap and put it on a lame piece of white bread that can't even fully wrap it or stay in tact whatsoever. For the record, I did not want a refund - I only wanted them to either STATE that their "so-called Wrap" comes on a piece of white bread, or else take it off the manu, because that is NOT a sausage wrap and I would never order this in my life on a piece of white bread. From the talk I had with the Supervisor, he claims their process has been in place since the 60's but anyone around here knows that "Sausage wraps" are a relatively modern concoction only brought about maybe 20-25 years ago. So this certainly wasn't on the menu in the 60's.and I don't care anyway - this is not a sausage "Wrap" and it's insulting to call it that. And it doesn't seem like they will change it, but I welcome a response from the owner saying they will. Outside of that, I will never buy from Southside Market again, and that includes meats they sell at HEB. If you don't know what a sausage wrap is, then you don't belong making BBQ.
Ok now - just to give my honest opinion of the food quality and taste: Sausage was "ok". I really don't like the consistency so much, but it didn't taste bad. The sauce: Too Wet !! No thickness at all, and kinda runny. No smoky flavor at all. It was just "ok" I give it a 5/10. The flavor was decent, but not great. It was go. About the sandwich - first off...bun was small, not warmed up or anything...kindof a downer. The meat was pretty good 7.5/10 -- not too fatty at all which was nice, good consistency, but not blowing me away with flavor. Furthermore the sauce left much to be desired and of course it needed sauce, but the sandwich with pickles and sauce was very mediocre. 6/10. The bun and sauce brought it down - if those were better I could have given it a 8.5 or 9 out of 10.
My verdict - desappointed to say the least. I don't hate this company, but from the food today, I have no reason to ever eat there again. Just because you know how to smoke and grill meat doesn't mean you know how to do BBQ - I don't care how long you have been in business.
Lastly - I'm not upset but there were ZERO napkins in the bag. I did ask the supervisor if I was supposed to ask for them, and he said No - that he will coach the employee. But seriously - you gave me a brisket sandwich and a soggy sausage bread thing and not 1 single napkin?? Well, it seems to go with the territory that they are missing the mark.
The takeaway - Seriously get tortillas or take "Sausage Wrap" off the menu. It is sacrilegious and also quite frankly false advertising. Y'all know this is...
Read moreAfter passing by this institution for years, we finally stopped in after an extended trip to Inks Lake. The atmosphere and the aroma made me hopeful that this would be a great BBQ experience. Unfortunately, the food just didn’t quite meet our expectations.
We ordered the chopped beef sandwich and two meat plate (regular sausage and sliced brisket) with macaroni and cheese and beans, side of potato salad, peach cobbler and the sausage slammer.
Chopped beef sandwich: Very tasty - nice bun, perfect texture in the meat and not too much sauce mixed into the meat.
Meat plate: The sliced brisket was tender but not that flavorful. The sausage was completely forgettable. For the price, the meat portions were rather small. The macaroni and cheese was actually very good, with a nice bread crumb/panko topping. The beans werey bland and forgettable. The onions includedu on the plate might have gone bad, as they smelled rancid.
Sausage slammer: This was probably the most disgusting thing I’ve ordered at a restaurant in some time. The sausage was highly processed and it obviously, very cheap. The cheese inside tasted similar to cheese whiz or even nacho cheese with a slightly thicker, almost curdled texture. It literally made me want to gag. My husband and I each had one bite and threw the rest away.
Peach cobbler: Not very sweet, lacking in flavor and overall, rather disappointing.
Potato salad: I liked the potato skins mixed in. Although it was somewhat tasty, I only ate a few bites and did not find it tasty enough to eat even half of my portion.
I will say, their Texas bold house barbecue sauce is pretty fantastic. I’m really glad that I went with my gut and purchased a bottle of it. Their original sauce is a bit of a turn off, as I felt it had too much clove and nutmeg. Then again, barbecue sauce, and barbecue in general, is very much like chili in the fact that everyone has their own staunch opinion about how it should taste, especially native Texans like me!
Overall, I’m glad we finally eased our curiosity and gave it a try but unfortunately, we will not return. I hope that management takes the time to read reviews like this and others similar to this one, and figures out ways to remedy these quality issues. I wish this restaurant...
Read moreMan, I hate having to give a low review, I want to start off by saying that I've come here for many years and the services is really trash at this point, food is okay for barbecue, I'm not going to make it seem like it's the best in the state of Texas, but the sausage to me is my favorite but today on my way back from Houston, I stopped by and spent $80 on the barbecue, the service was just terrible, the place was empty as you can see in the photos and I asked them if they do military discount and they didn't even know, they had to check with this manager who was a young white girl, she came over to the register and did some things and I thought okay, good, I got a military discount which I'm grateful for!, but when I looked at the receipt as you can look at the receipt, I got a whole total of $1.20 off and what she did was just take one of the line items and take 10% off of that, so that is different from what Rudy's Barbecue does, they actually give you 10% off the whole amount and also do other barbcue places, so I wasn't very pleased about that, I don't think they should be doing that, I think they should give First Responders and veterans 10% off the entire meal but that wasn't the case here, also they forgot to put my banana pudding in the bag after waiting for the bag to come my way for some time because apparently there was confusion on who needed deliver my food to me when the place was empty so I was kind of disappointed about that it seemed like they just kept not caring about me or other customers so that is my just Chief complaint today, which is how they forgot my freaking banana pudding and gave me the lowest discount that I've ever gotten in my entire life and as you can see barbecue is not cheap $80 for these items there's definitely gone up, I don't know what we're going to do in this country if things keep going the way they're going, again I'm not saying don't go there, I recommend the place but the service needs to be picked up and people need to be aware of giving customers their food as fast...
