I have a large family and we own several homes and have decades attending the schools and if not working in elmhurst we enjoy having everything with in reach. Small businesses usually know how to appreciate their customers. Up until this year we have not had much to complain about. 3 times we have commented on the food preparation and now final straw the full priced undercooked food I found a slap in the face I stood with in direct view. The two employees were to the point of rude and the cook spent more time talking to those 2. I commented but their backs didnt respond and seemed to be enjoying each other's company. I was not exactly pleased but it was my nephew favorite place and bieng his birthday I couldn't tell him no. He saw the expression on my face and he tried to keep my attention. My niece was on social media letting her friends know that i was out of the hospital and instead of meeting her little friends there every week to start looking for a new spot due to my not being respected. Seeing the second order was heated not even really cooked I decided to keep my nephews day his and go on making the plans as perfect as I wanted after taking a dozen kids to and from dinner to the movies and then to one of our houses for a swim, cake and gifts. I was exhausted and sad but after chemo the following I called and having the food uneaten and raw I offered to bring It by also i made sure they knew what i tipped and the details i got the worst apology ever in my life and was told a manager would be made aware and would be contacted. 5 days later I am left ignored and donated over 20 dollars to a formerly good place and know at least its good to know how decades of loyalty and a small fortune went to someone's pocket along with my respect. The employees do not have what the former staff provided. I was tempted to return the food in person. But their no policy is once an order is placed no refunds no matter what. Try your luck but dont expect perfection or be too disappointed with losing money. A gamble...
Read moreHamburger Heaven offers wonderful food with a smile. In particular, the fries are most excellent.
To elaborate, the name gives you a pretty good idea of what to expect. This is a no-frills burger joint that slings large, tasty burgers. In addition, they offer a variety of beverages, most notably their root beer and milkshakes, ice cream, and some of the best crinkle cut fries around. These are fries that do justice to the potatoes they so recently were, crispy and lightly salted, and go great with a cup of molten cheese sauce. The fries are good enough that they (almost) outshine the actual burgers as well. Burgers are thin, wide patties with a wide variety of topping options. Toppings portions are generous and in the case of the vegetables always quite fresh.
The venue itself is entirely outdoors, so plan any visit accordingly. The seating is largely in direct sunlight, although this makes it easy to provide ample distance between any two tables. Table sizes are small, typically being 2 or 4 seats. Larger groups may wish to consider taking their order to go, possibly walking over to enjoy the fountain and bench seating outside city hall ~1 block south. There is free parking available in the lot just east of the building as well.
The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable, but be advised that hearing what they have to say can be tricky, particularly on windy days. However, this is the trade off for being able to complete an entire transaction without physical contact with the actual staff, for those individuals paying close attention to such measures. Finally, after you order, hang on to your receipt as they like to double check order numbers to prevent mix-ups, even if there are few guests present at the time.
All in all, this is a great place to eat when in the mood for a burger, and they...
Read moreI ordered the bacon burger with cheddar cheese and no lettuce. The burger tasted like it came from a box or maybe one of the 1/3 lb sleeves from Costco. Given the old school roadside look, I expected a handmade patty.
I liked the soft brioche bun after the first few bites. I thought it was steamed, but it got rubbery towards the end which suggests that it may have been microwaved. Their special sauce of mayo, mustard, and relish was a unique addition to the bottom of the burger. The sack of fries for $4.99 is large enough to share. The fries were fresh crinkle cut, but they tasted like frozen fries that came out of a food service bag. I would have expected hand cut fries from a classic hamburger place.. The signs say they have been open since 1948. I am sure many of the people who come to HH return for the sentimental value as they have been open nearly 80 years. Sometime since then they began taking the shortcut, preparing burgers from a box and fries from the freezer. If you are coming here for the first time, you should go to a local bar or someplace that makes handmade burgers. Even Culver's up the street would be a better value than the almost $20 that I paid for a Costco-quality burger and fries.
As I write this review in the parking lot, I saw three or four groups of people return to their vehicles with ice cream or milkshakes. Maybe this is a dessert place that also sells burgers. I will try a...
