Donut Series, Part 15 “I need a little sweetness in my life. Sugar, yes please!” Maroon 5
Why does it seem like sometimes your body craves something that only an infusion of sugar can satisfy? While I may not know why that happens, I can tell you that donuts sure seem like a great option when you find yourself in this predicament!
The owners of “Leucadia Donut Shoppe” have been fulfilling these needs for North County San Diegans for more than 30 years. I heard that this husband and wife team put their kids through college one 🍩 at a time, so I had to ask them if this local legend is accurate. The husband laughed, told me that it is true, but also confided that the donut gravy train wasn’t entirely sufficient and needed to be supplemented by student loans.
I was also curious about how the interior walls came to be covered by the photos of so many different patrons. He explained that initially they placed a few family pics on the wall and found that customers wanted to get in on the action themselves (which led to the bumper sticker contributions that now entirely cover their front windows).
If you choose to visit while in search of a sugar fix, I think you’ll find this to be one of the friendliest places to enjoy a donut. A little advice though: bring cash (that’s all they accept) and get here as early as you can. While their advertised closing time is 1:00, on the day we visited most of the donuts had been claimed by 9:00 (and by 10:00 they were down to their last dozen). I was so disappointed that they try to get me to get a Venmo app...lol...ah...no...as a business owner myself I was inconvenienced to drive to a atm and drive back, but it was worth it. Just disappointed that they don't accept debit or credit card. The donuts were D'lish.....and fresh....a little too expensive for 3 donuts it was $9 bucks....same quality and taste as Winchells Donuts ....so if your ok with tossing money away this is your place. But if you don't like throwing away money it's maybe worth it more to drive somewhere that accepts credit card or debit especially when their donut prices are expensive. The owners were super rude , telling me after I paid cash that I should get the venmo app....I didn't like the rudness. I felt like telling them it's about to be 2024 get...
Read moreI'm disappointed with the husband & wife owners of Leucadia Donut Shoppe, as they went from only having my favorite donut-The Devil's Food With Nuts Donut, on the weekend, to now only making them in the Summer-Time.
I had a rather testy exchange with him, yesterday morning, 5/21/23, in which I questioned why they never have my Devil's Food W/ Nuts Donuts in the case anymore. He told me, unapologetically, that they don't sell enough of them to have in the regular donut rotation, so they will only "Have," them in the Summer.
This place is a Cash Only Business, which is a hassle, on the odd times you find yourself cashless, & hungry for a donut, so this, coupled with this guy not caring to stock my favorite donut, means I now won't be caring to support his business. It truly works both ways. I doubt this will hurt his business, because his donuts are tasty, but he won't be getting any money from my wife & I, from...
