When people say "The Office" they are either referring to the tv show, the office in North Park, "Father's office" the burger joint in LA or here. I think that the reason there is some confusion is that everyone leave's off the whole "Duke's" part of the name. Technically in Cardiff right next to VG's it's a ways away from any other "bar" yes there is wine bars, but those don't count and it's a ways away from DT Encinitas or even Kraken. In a competition of the diviest dive around I'd say The Office takes the cake. It's divier due to the size, layout, age, and patrons. Before 11 on most night's it's dead, like really dead, just drunks. Good service, kind of friendly actually, but after 11 it gets packed on Fridays and Saturdays, usually there is no bouncer until 8 which seems a little late. Not that I'm against country, it's just not my thing and kind of a buzz kill to me, but having a few beers, shooting pool is what I come here for with a few friends, but doing that while listening to country music is the reason I stopped coming here as regularly. Now I don't' care enough to "override" their choice with my own money because I rarely put money in juke boxes, but even the Karaoke night at Kraken is better and I would even walk to Saloon, D Street.
The loft style levels can be a nuisance for pool players and it's pretty dark upstairs. They could use better prices on...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreOn February fourth on Sunday night around 8pm I went to this place with my friends. When I walked into the establishment there was nobody outside/inside checking for ID. Which was cool because I wasnt drinking anyways. Around 10:30 I went outside to put away my jacket because it was getting hot. And up to this point I wouldnt have gave a bad review. Although I was approached very aggressively by a a person asking for I.d . At this point I thought it was just some random drunk person because he was slurring and acting aggressive towards me and my friend. I didn't have my wallet so I knew I had no room to argue. So I started at the entrance for a second trying to get the keys from my friend . And the bartender increasingly got more aggressive so I just stepped outside without grabbing the keys because I didn't want to deal with an angry drunk person. As I was standing outside waiting for my friends to finish their drinks he came out to vent I suppose since we were so difficult to deal with. He proclaimed it was his first night bartending. I'm not sure if it's his first night at the establishment or literally his first shift as a bartender but if you're going to drink while on the clock you should take extra care not to come off as someone who is an...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThe worst bartender experience I have ever encountered. We walked in and gave out IDs and ordered drinks. My friend ordered a green tea shot and the lady behind the bar just looked at my friend in disgust and said āIāll have to get to you after everyone else ordersā most of us ordered beers and then a girl in our party order a mai tai and she again just looked with disgust and said āI am NOT making you a mai taiā and then later said āMAI TAI GIRLā and just was seriously so rude. I understand there are regulars here but we heard such good things about this bar and the lady bartender was so disgustingly rude I will DEFINITELY not be coming back I was so turned off. Sheās lucky we even tipped her. We were all super polite and easy but she was so rude from the moment we walked through those doors. I will be expressing to others not to give that business when the Shanty is less than 100 yards away and way more friendly and inviting. Super...
