Mark’s: The Spot
My first impression of Mark’s restaurant is that it’s cozily nestled on a side street away from most of the other restaurants. It feels special. The phrase diamond in the rough comes to mind. The rest of the neighborhood is ramshackle, the view afforded by the dining area boasts boarded up windows. This place was carved out of the rock of Thompsonville, a labor of love undertaken by the restaurant’s owner, Kim— Or as her grandson called out in a panicked voice after breaking a salt shaker: “Geegee!”
She responded with a wave of her hand and a smile. “Don’t worry about it dear, you’re not the first person who’s done that.” The atmosphere of love and family that Mark’s exudes is positively astonishing. It’s been a long time since I’ve felt this amount of love in any building or business. You can see just how much love Kim and her family poured into this place in the photos on the walls—
They show the building before it was remodeled, and it’s nearly falling apart. Looking at it nowadays, it’s this beautiful little building.
The food here is fantastic, the service lightning fast. I was in a rush to get to a dentists appointment when I sat down, and when I mentioned that I was in a rush, Kim said “it’ll be four and a half minutes for a reuben,” and flashed me the same confident, warm smile that she’d given her grandson.
When the food came out, Kim apologized. “Actually took five minutes-“ she said, before greeting her granddaughter who had just arrived; her arms wide open to give the five-year-old a big hug.
That’s the best way that I can sum up eating at Mark’s, I thought to myself, as I ate one of their English muffins (which are made in house, delightfully crispy and buttery, and the only English Muffin I’ve ever actually enjoyed) is as follows:
Eating here is like getting a big hug from a grandmother who...
Read moreI grew up in Thompsonville and during that time I came to the understanding that its not the kind of area that would have a nice place to sit down and eat. If I'd ever want to go out, id have to travel to the center of town, saturated with chain restaurants and even further for something locally owned. I drove by Mark's a few times and never stopped by although I was taken aback by the aesthetically pleasing exterior. When i finally decided to stop by i was amazed. The inside matches the outside, adorable. Its clearly very well taken care of. Everything looked clean and organized. We sat down and were promptly greeted by Lindsay, who was outstandingly pleasant and personable; greeting several gentlemen by name as they came in the door and chatted with her before grabbing their coffee. The food was also very impressive. The bagel had just come out of the oven and was warm and soft. For $26 my boyfriend and I had 2 entrees; steak and eggs and a breakfast burritos as well as a bagel, a bottle of water, orange juice and coffee. We also couldn't help but grab a few more bagels go enjoy at home. For that price it's likely that we'll stop buying our bagels and start going to Mark's as we were informed that with a few days notice you can buy their homemade bagels by the dozen. I highly recommend stopping by to anyone who lives in the area or anyone who's looking for a fresh meal and friendly service. Ive never been more proud to be a...
Read moreok i don't get how this place was given so many stars. this place is very much in the neighborhood so maybe people like having it there for days they don't feel like cooking or maybe they don't know how to cook. we tried this place recently due to the stars we saw and were so bummed it was not 5-star quality. they have no parking lot so you park on the street or in an abandoned parking lot across the street. the place is super small and understaffed. we were told it was meant to only be a takeout place but they decided to add chairs and tables since people would linger. we saw a lot of old people and some families there. so as soon as we got there they had us sit at a dirty table with the previous customers meal leftovers still there. then they asked us to move to a smaller table...we ordered pancakes and breakfast sandwich and both were bland and not worth the long wait. the coffee was bleh. seriously, i'd say you're better off going to mc-donalds...especially if you like good food and good coffee. the 2 ladies working were nice but that's about it. i didn't go there for just nice. i wanted a really good breakfast which was supposed to happen given the star reviews. the reviews are probably all family/friends and...
