This place is a wonderfully eclectic hideout in the middle of downtown Ennis, where you would never expect it. I was looking for healthy options when visiting my daughter in Ennis, the majority of food services are fast food.

So my good old trustee Yelp app allowed me to search for healthy foods. I immediately saw salad, baked salmon and multiple delicious looking healthy foods.

Good deal this was very close to me and very convenient off of the main road which is called Main Street. You get the small town field and driving down the brick streets Where there’s only one lane on each side of the road. But this location was easy to find with the signage on the building and the boards by the sidewalk.

I sat at the bar immediately captain Ben, the mixologist/bartender with the smile. I call him captain Ben because he has an eyepatch over his right eye, indicating my childhood imagination of Captain Jack the pirate. Ben has a great sense of humor. Excellent! I’m sure this won’t be offensive.

So I always often ask what is the best option for a healthy lunch. I showed Ben the picture that I saw on Yelp. He said they’re not serving that one anymore and provided several options that would go with the salmon that I want. Well I waited for the salmon. He provided the happy hour drinks which consisted of cosmopolitan, beer or another drink obviously, I wasn’t interested because I don’t remember. The drink was fantastically designed for me is great.

My food arrived and the salmon was perfectly seasoned on a bed of mixed greens with four swirls of salami cutely designed on each corner of the plate. The salad was delicious! After finishing my meal, I asked for the sweets and then suggested this wonderful buttery yellow cake. This was no ordinary, yellow piece of cake don’t get it twisted! Only after one bite, I immediately knew that the outward was crusty, but the inside was creamy and gooey and milky, sweet. The only thing that was missing was a scoop of old-fashioned homemade Bluebell ice cream, which they did not have and I made the suggestion to get some for me next time. Ben was fantastic and I even met another lady behind the counter. That was very kind and I asked her a few questions as well. Both were very accommodating and answering my questions about Fern in the wild!

So after paying my bill, I noticed there was a boutique directly on the other side. Let’s just say that I spent almost $300 on lots of handmade Texas treats, perfumes, and jewelry. Supporting the local domestic violence, organization, and local vendors in the area. I came out on top! I will be back every single time I visit my daughter in Ennis. Thanks for being...

Well, this place has lost our business. My daughter has tried since March to get reservations - email and phone calls; each time it was stated, we do not take reservations. This morning, my daughter called again, early this morning, to see if they take reservations. She was told no, but to be here by 10:30 a.m. This was for a baby shower get-together. Our friend arrived at the restaurant to LEARN that they do take reservations and that they couldn’t get us in until 1:00 p.m. I have to say, this was ridiculous, and apparently the people answering phones are clueless and/or just don't care. I have lost all respect for this restaurant.

👉Responding back to Fern In The Wild's response. (Please see review on their facebook page to understand what "REALLY" took place. The owner is leaving out "A LOT" of details).

This is the same review that you left on your Facebook page but it wasn't a response to me but my daughter.  Blaming the customer is not acceptable as a response. I have a screenshot of what I posted to your response on Facebook. I haven't eaten at this restaurant, but this experience has left a horrible taste in my mouth. Therefore, I will never recommend or eat at your establishment. And as I stated before, if you have cameras in your establishment, review them first before blaming the customer. To add to that, if you don't have cameras, I suggest getting some so that you can see what really goes on.

Let me also give you a 101 course on responding to such issues.

👉I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, and I do hope you were able to secure accommodations. I will look into this matter, as we always have taken reservations. I will also look into our system that we used for web based reservations and see what the issue may have been in being able to provide reservation accommodations for your party. Again, please accept my sincere apology, and I do hope you don't let this unfortunate situation prevent you from dining with us in the future. If you would like to reserve a time with us in the future, please call our store directly and ask for XXX and we will ensure that you have a pleasurable experience moving...

I’ve been here multiple times for the food and it’s been great. And I wasn’t going to make a post about my experience this past Saturday, until management started lying saying that we were screaming and yelling at them. My friend had been reaching out to them to try and make a reservation for a party of 15, since the website only allows you to book up to 10. Every time she would call they’d say no reservations. If it was a matter of it being too many people, they could have said that. But they didn’t. We had called the morning of in an attempt to try and make a reservation one more time. They stated to come in and just save a table since they’d be busy at the time they wanted. I came in early, to see that there were multiple tables reserved and expressed my concern to the hostess. I put my friend on the phone so she could explain what had happened to the manager. The entire time we remained cordial but we wanted to let the manager know what had happened. With this being said, instead of management owning up to their employees mistake of not allowing us to make a reservation, they’re now attempting to say we were yelling and screaming at them. This is very saddening as I’ve never yelled and screamed at anyone. The hostess was a very sweet girl, and it wasn’t her fault, so why would we yell and scream at her? I spoke the the manager and she said there was nothing they could do for us other than get us in 2 hours later than what we needed, so I just walked out and went somewhere else. Maybe fern in the wild should install video cameras in their lobby before they start to lie about customers screaming at them, versus owning up to a simple mistake. Could have been a “sorry, won’t happen...

We visited this restaurant on the Saturday of the Ennis Bluebonnet Festival—a special occasion that naturally draws a large crowd. We were told the wait time would be about 1 to 1.5 hours, so we joined the waitlist and waited patiently. About an hour and a half later, we received a text message saying our table was ready. However, when we arrived, we watched the hostess seat a walk-in party immediately at a six-person table that had just opened—while we were left standing for another 25 minutes despite our “ready” notification. When I asked about it, the hostess claimed that the walk-in guests were ahead of us on the list, which was clearly not true. The service was also incredibly slow. It took 20–30 minutes for the food to arrive, but we tried to be understanding, considering how busy it was. We just wanted to eat quickly and move on—but things only got worse. When my husband finally received his sandwich, he bit into a bread tie that had been left inside. We informed the server, who apologized and said they would replace the meal. The manager briefly came by to acknowledge the issue. However, after waiting over 30 minutes for the first sandwich, the replacement took more than 20 additional minutes to arrive. In total, we spent over 3.5 hours at the restaurant—only to be served a meal with a potential safety hazard. To make matters worse, they still charged us the full amount, even though my husband almost swallowed a piece of wire and they expected a generous tip. This experience showed a clear lack of organization, accountability and customer care.

Some friends told us about this place; their excitement about the menu, the ambiance, and the service piqued our interest. Their description just scratched the surface of how cool and good this place is. We had chicken croquettes and waygu carpaccio for appetizer. What a great way to start. The coolness of the carpaccio mixed so well with the spiciness of the chicken croquettes. I should have licked the plate. Our mains were Shrimp and Grits and osso bucco. Oh. My. Goodness!! The meat was falling off the osso bucco and was perfectly prepared. The shrimp and grits was a touch spicy, but was the best I've ever had. Finally, we ended with an apple tart and chocolate cake. Sooo good!! The food was great, but they were gearing up for their fall menu and didn't have a couple of items we were looking forward to. After dinner, there's a really cool and eclectic bar to hang out with friends after an awesome meal. Lots of attention to detail and a really cool vibe to enjoy a Weller pour, a sweet or sour martini, or one of their signature cocktails. Can't wait to go back to see what they offer for fall/winter. Ask for Nathaniel - he's awesome!
