El Flako's Wrangler Barbecue — Restaurant in Escondido

Looking from the outside it looked the typical hole-in-the-wall, but inside it was clean and pleasant. Tables weren't all squished together, which I appreciated. The BBQ may not be what people think of traditionally as BBQ. The BBQ sauce is served separately. We had the meat plates with 2 sides. I ate beef brisket with salad and baked beans, my friend ate the pulled pork with potato salad and French fries. We were both happy with our selections. Portions were nice sized and meal came with a bun for those that want bread or want their meat and BBQ sauce in bread. My beef brisket was tender. My salad greens wasn't fancy, but it was fresh. I would say though I thought the beans and potato salad were a bit on the sweet side, but that's a matter of taste, my friend liked them. I tasted a bit of his potato salad, it tasted like sweet pickle juice had been added. French fries were hot and fresh. We ate in, it only took about 10 minutes or so for the food to be served. The menu is a bit limited, but it's adequate, no chicken available. I'd eat here again, more beef brisket for me please! Sorry, I didn't think to take a picture...

Food is subpar the coleslaw is just cabbage with very little dressing the BBQ sauce they have is way to sweet or smokey im not even sure. The beef is always over cooked and the ham just tastes weird the only great food they have are the bus. There service is okay because there is only like ever 3 people working in mean you cant expect much. The atmosphere is very open and very bland like there's western stuff on the walls and like 1 TV the whole floor plan is very open. This place definitely needs to TLC a makeover or something. I have lived in Escondido for 25 years and have always been leery of this place because there is no smell of smoke. How can you have barbecue with no smoke. I stopped in and got a beef plate I assumed it would be brisket (it was not). Got potato salad and slaw for sides. Beef had no flavor and no smoke and was not sauced which was good for the dogs. Oven cooked beef roast. Prepackaged slaw and potato salad. Sauce was not good.

People were nice place looked clean how they have been able to survive all these years with such bad food...
