Hands down my favorite sushi place in Chicago land. To me it’s not only about the food but also the friendly environment and staff that makes the restaurant feel like a family. This place has been open for over 35 years, owned and operated by a family and Kuni san is the owner who’s been making sushi his entire life. They have fresh fish/seafood and a lot of them are imported from Japan. I always go for Aji, Amaebe, sake nigiri no matter what else I order. Honestly sometime it’s the best to trust the chef and have them pick - never been disappointed. I don’t think it’s the right place for none authentic sushi eaters (ie if you only enjoy cooked items or rolls like Cali / volcano rolls), because what they are the best at are sashimi and nigiris, plus if you come often you’ll discover a lot of hidden menu items - all very delicious. The place is also very reasonably priced, and I’d come here any time over Momotaro, which is also good but not as good value.
Also I don’t know how many times I’ve sat at the bar and talked to someone next to me that has been coming to this place over 20/30 years. Like I said it’s not only about the food but also the feel of a family. I’ve had times when I think perhaps some small things could be better but it would never stop me from coming here. Love love...
Read moreI love this place, the food is the best, I've never had a bad experience, an example of the kind of great service you receive during your dining experience, I had never eaten Uni, and asked my server for an order of Uni, she went to place my order but propply returned to inform me that the chef was sorry but that they only had East coast caught Uni no West coast product, Since I had never tried it, I said what the heck I'll take order. I thought it was delicious, the next visit the chef remembered me and while I was enjoying my miso soup the server appeared with an order Uni. I noticed the color was different brighter and had a sweetness unlike my previous visit and the flavor was full of ocean goodness. I ask was this West coast? it was indeed, I learned that most Uni served in the US are from Santa Barbara (California), Hokkaido (Japan), and Maine (East Coast) USA. 1,2,3 in the order listed. I love Uni.
Special note to the reviewer Spicy, who complained about his visit to Kunis, seeing the chef cutting frozen Tuna, Dude get to know your food, if you want to get parasites' then by all means eat sushi fish that hasn't been frozen, if you still desire unfrozen raw fish, then you can devour certain varieties of Tuna and...
Read moreI saw the owner replied to a review saying that the freshness of the food is their priority . Sounds very hilarious to me. You need to prove it with facts not from your own words. Went there once and I swear to god it is literally the worst Japanese food I have ever eaten around Chicago neighborhood. Of course you (the Owner) can say your food is fresh etc.. but the fact is just different from the owner’s word—during my visit, the fish is not even close to fresh, it tasted like just defrosted from the fridge. Trust me I am a foodie and I've eaten in many seafood restaurants and I think normal human beings all have a common sense of what fresh fish suppose to be tasted like.
Their teriyaki sauce tastes so bad that words can't describe it. Feels like they just Sprinkled the food with cheap, extremely salty soy sauce. I ate at other Japanese restaurants like “Umai; Gyu kaku; Shinsen ‘’ etc..All thanks to Kuni gave me a chance to taste what is the worst teriyaki dish I’ve ever eaten in my life.
Very frustrated and disappointed dinner. It is extremely weird to me that their rating is 4.6 . It is shameful that this place has been in business for 30 more years but it turned out to be a very...
