Mångata Wine & Raw Bar — Restaurant in Fargo

8/15/2025 - Update! I have been back since my experience last time and it was a night and day difference. Food was still fantastic and the service was 10 out of 10. I didn't have the same staff member as last time and the person that helped me was amazing. I said I wanted to try the oysters, they told me about all the ones they had available and offered to give me a mix of the different types. Once it came out, I was asked if I wanted hot sauce (they use Off The Deck and it's delicious) and got some for me right away. They even had a print out of the different types of oysters on the plate so I could keep track of what one I was eating. The wine assistance was also great - they had increased their sparkling section and the Lumbrusco was DELICIOUS! I'll be back!

Original Review: I wanted to try raw oysters for the first time and thought that Mångata would be a great place to try. The food itself was very good, but the service and environment let it down horribly.

I made it clear that it was my first time to try raw oysters and I was very excited to be there and the reaction was lukewarm at best. The staff member (who appeared to be the manager) just looked at me and said, "What do you want to order?" No greeting, no recommendations, no explanation of the menu options, nothing. I asked if there was a minimum order requirement since I wasn't sure if I would like them and, again, the response was terrible, "Whatever you want."

I started with three and he just nodded and walked off. I know that there were numerous options for oysters and he didn't ask for any preference. It would have been nice to know what the oysters were and how they differed, but I wasn't given that opportunity. The food came back and it was very good, but again, no explanation of anything. There was clearly a mignonette sauce on the oysters, which was lovely, but I only learned about this after Googling when I got home. I ended up getting more oysters because I enjoyed the flavor so much and thought a bit of wine would be a nice touch. I said I was looking for something sparkly and the manager just stared at me. I thought it would be an opportunity to perhaps go over any options, since this is what has happened every other time I've gone somewhere and wasn't sure what to get. I decided on the cheapest glass of bubbles since I sure wasn't going to spend more without knowing what the hell the options were.

The place itself wasn't busy so I wasn't taking him away from other patrons or duties. He was on his phone or computer when not serving others. He seriously seemed irritated I was even there.

I'm not sure what was going on that day, but I spoke to a friend afterwards because the visit was so unpleasant and she said that she's had the same experience there.

I would recommend the food, but don't be surprised if the service is lackluster at best. If you are a first timer for some of the raw options, be prepared to not have any help. One star service, 4 star for...

We stopped in the afternoon. My wife and I ordered a flight to sample. The gentlemen informed us he was the one who decides the wines that were there after we asked lots of questions, he was not very helpful. We told him what we liked and where we were at in wine selection, like pinot,blanc,moscato.......We did a blind flight after all the questions it was his choice (as "" the blind flight). We have traveled to a number of winery and distillery, never done a blind flight. Interesting. DEFINITELY not a choice to do again, usually at an unknown place and wines this is how we would. Choose to sit and have a few glasses. The experience was not very good. We felt we unconvinced him, away from other important things, ( we were the only one there for wine). Not very talkative to promott the wine. He selected wines that would not have been for a very seasoned red wine person. Disappointing, overpriced, lacking in discussion for atmosphere. Later as we walked around the shoppes we walked past again he was off to the side doing a store selection with another man with bottles lined up on counter. Maybe he is better at wine...

This place is awesome! Went a few months ago while I was traveling to Fargo & forgot to leave a review.

Nice wine bar with typical wine bar apps/oysters inside of a marketplace. Customer service was amazing — got to see the woman working there (didn’t catch her name unfortunately) shuck my oysters in front of me. Before ordering, she was able to tell me all of the flavour profiles of the oysters & what they would be best paired with on top of them.

The tinned fish part of the menu may be off-setting or somewhat weird to people — but this is a Swedish-inspired wine bar (judging by the name). Swedes LOVE tinned fish & I seriously implore you to try one of them — they’re high quality and aren’t tinned fish that you’d be used to at your supermarket; the Swedes take it seriously!

Oysters were amazing & fresh — you could have told me I was sitting at an oyster bar in the Carolinas and I would not have known the difference. It is amazing to have a place like this in Fargo, ND with such a fresh oyster selection!
