It's with a heavy heart that I write this review. I was a big fan of HBC Farmington for about a year after it opened. The building is charming, and the staff has always been warm and welcoming. But the draw of a restaurant is the food, and this is where HBC has seriously let me down.
HBC's baked goods, which I believe are prepared off-site and delivered, are pretty good. If you get a croissant or muffin off the rack, you probably will not be disappointed. However, the draw for me was their breakfast menu, as I got hooked on the HBC Eggwich--egg, breakfast potatoes, tomato jam, and cheddar on a brioche bun. When assembled with care, it's a novel and great sandwich.
The HBC Eggwich has not been assembled with care for quite some time. The egg is unevenly cooked and spills awkwardly out of the bun. The potatoes are thick, over-salted, and undercooked (imagine biting into a raw potato). The tomato jam is haphazardly scooped on with no attempt to even, overpowering everything when you get a mouthful of jam. And the brioche bun, previously lightly toasted, now sags under the weight of grease. Altogether, the whole thing appears to have been slapped together by a blind raccoon on a 10-second timer.
The first time this happened, I figured it was a fluke. And the second time. And the third time. The fourth time, I realized this was now the standard fare. I hope HBC fixes this, but until then, I will be reminiscing about those early days...
Read moreI used to split my mornings between Rebel Dog and HBC depending on my route to work that day. I really loved the coffee & breakfast sandwiches at HBC. After my experience today, I will not be returning. I called to place my order over the phone since there seemed to be a technical error while ordering online like I normally do, and whoever answered the phone was so rude and offsetting that I ended up saying ‘never mind’ and instead went to Rebel Dog. I also bought a Rebel Dog sticker for the back of my car since we’re exclusive now. I hope whoever made me feel so uncomfortable and unwelcome while attempting to place an order ahead isn't with HBC for long, it’s a terrible look on the rest of the (usually) friendly staff I’ve dealt with in my many, many past...
Read moreI’ve often driven past Hartford Baking Co and finally had the chance to stop in! It was a great place to catch up with my mother-in-law, with a nice seating area upstairs. They had a great variety of fall specials. I’m not usually a big coffee drinker, but the maple one was nice and sweet to cut the bitterness of the coffee, and I really enjoyed it! My husband loved his cappuccino and my mother-in-law was a fan of the pumpkin iced latte. The pastries were all fresh too. The staff handled the volume of customers well, and they were welcoming. We’ll...
