I frequent this coffee shop quite often. The ambiance and food are generally great, but I am deeply frustrated with the consistent misgendering I experience here, which has compelled me to leave this review.
Nearly every time I've visited, staff members have consistently referred to me, and others, by outdated honorifics such as "sir" or "ma'am" which don't match my expression nor name. Not only this, but they've also written down the opposite gender counterpart of my name even after I clearly state it. This is not only careless but deeply disrespectful and offensive.
In a society as diverse as ours, it is essential to understand and acknowledge that not everyone finds being called "sir" or "ma'am" to be a sign of respect. It is an unsettling throwback to historic England and American Slavery. This seemingly small detail can have a profound impact on customers like me who do not identify or feel comfortable with these traditional honorifics. This routine misgendering creates an uncomfortable environment and subjects me to unnecessary anxiety, which should not be the case in a setting as common and casual as a coffee shop where people go to relax.
It's especially disheartening given that this coffee shop is one of the few open places on campus during the summer. This leaves me with limited choices and the feeling of being forced to tolerate disrespectful treatment just to eat.
I urge the Chartwells and Hill Coffee management to provide sensitivity training for their staff on understanding and using appropriate gender-neutral language, and to implement practices that promote inclusivity. Misgendering is not a small issue to those it affects. It's a matter of basic respect and acknowledgement of our identities.
I hope this review leads to significant changes in how customers are treated at this coffee shop. I look forward to being able to give a better rating in the future based on the respect and consideration shown to...
Read moreI've come to hill coffee numerous times over the past two years, and I'm sorry to say that their service and quality has really gone downhill and I won't be returning anymore. Their prices have spiked: $1.50 for cold foam? $8+ for a SMALL flavored iced chai that tasted like water? Absurd. Their coffee is, to be frank, terrible, they just usually hide it with enough sugar to kill a small mammal (except when they forget it). I've had them mess up my order so many times--I've gotten dirty chai without chai in it (how do you even do that??), had to return more matchas than I can count because they use almond milk in it even when I tell them I have an allergy, and even had a barista tell me that an Old Main (expresso with steamed milk, honey, and cinnamon) wasn't supposed to have milk in it??? I get that they're student workers, but I'm a student too and being a young adult doesn't mean you get to be outright incompetent. The only thing good here still is the food, but it's too expensive for how little you get. I'm tired of wasting my time and money here, it isn't...

If you happen to be in the union I would suggest going to this place for your food and...
