I decided to try this place because it had such good reviews, but a lot of things played into making this just an average experience at best.
First of all, the food was fine. It was good. Not great, not impressive, but good. Definitely nothing bad about it. No complaints about the taste.
I started off with the Scotch Egg, which is kind of hard to find around here. It was very good- cooked perfectly. I’d call it the star of the meal to be honest. The mustard it was served with was good, but I tend to prefer a little bit of hot sauce on my scotch eggs. What was surprising was the price- $12.95 for ONE egg! As good as it was, it wasn’t worth $13 for one egg. Price alone would prevent me from buying this again.
I had fish and chips for my dinner. It was a basic fish and chips meal, and there was nothing that stood out about it in any way. Would I eat it again? Sure! Could I tell it apart from any other fish and chips I’ve had? Not really. It was just a middle of the road, good fish and chips meal. One slightly large piece of fish- it was nice and flaky, and the batter wasn’t too crispy. It wasn’t greasy, which is a plus. For $24.95, I think the portion could be slightly larger. The chips (fries) were ok, but I would have preferred them a little more crispy on the outside. At $25 for one piece of fish, I think they could afford some muslin on their lemon wedges so the customer doesn’t have to pick seeds out of their meal.
Staff was very nice, and quickly answered the few small questions I had. Drink refills could have come a little bit quicker, but overall not too bad.
Finally- the seating. Total deal breaker. It was 20 degrees outside, and they seated me right next to the front door… literally less than 3 feet away from it. I could reach over and touch the door. Every customer who entered or left the restaurant sent an arctic blast across my table. What a terribly uncomfortable dining experience… Common sense should tell the management to remove that table for the season.
The food was good, but at that price point I expect it to be at least noticeably above average. Seating a customer 3 feet from the main door on a bitterly cold night was ridiculous.
I spent $50 (including tip) for one slightly large piece of fish, fries, one scotch egg, and water. I probably won’t return.
EDIT/ UPDATE: I’m a bit surprised at the owner’s response. “…I’m surprised to see your concerns about being seated near the door shared across multiple review platforms, especially as the issue was not brought to our attention during your time here.” First of all, seating is not the only thing I discussed on “multiple platforms“. I shared a full review on each platform, as I often do for many restaurants “…had we been made aware of your discomfort, we would have been more than happy to move you to a warmer spot right away.” There were no other tables available. I got the last reservation available via OpenTable. People didn’t start coming and going until my food had been served, so the draft didn’t become apparent until it was too late. How awkward would it be to ask to be re-seated after being served your meal? Again- common sense should have prevailed here. The restaurant shouldn’t have a chair within arm’s distance of a door on...
Read moreThis place really has some potential, unfortunately its completely lost due to poor management, lack of communication and poor service.
To start, we had been waiting until Saturday to try their brunch, we arrived that morning to not be spoken to at all. There was a woman in front of me who had been standing there for over 7 mins, waiting to be spoken to and was visibly upset as people kept walking by ignoring her. The woman behind the register eventually asked if she had a reservation ( no where on their website does it suggest to have one, considering its an English restaurant in a strip mall, hidden away, you wouldn't think you typically assume), she responded no, the blond became INCREDIBLY passive aggressive and told her she should had made a reservation as they have become popular and the soonest she could be seated was maybe an hour. The lady ended up leaving really upset. There were tons of tables open, so it was off putting right out the gate, we almost didn't come back just based off the treatment we had just seen.
We ended up decided to make a reservation and come back in a couple hours, upon arrival it was giving the same energy as the lady I had encountered earlier. No one was acknowledging us for a few mins, once we were spoken to they had to clean our table off, then randomly some man came over and asked us if we had been spoken to, we said yes and he said muttered something then walked away, after we were seated we were once again left waiting, till some girl came over, did not introduce herself and just said she would be back to get our order. She gave us waters, then never came back, a couple came in and was sat down next to us, she came over, took their order right away and they got their tea well before we were ever asked what we wanted. All of a sudden some guy came over, once again, no introduction and just asked if we knew what we wanted to order. By this time it had been 15 mins and we had decided on what we wanted. We ordered everything to right then just in case.
During the time we were waiting for our food, we overheard the waitstaff, or lack there of, trying to figure out whos tables were whos and who wanted what. It was a cluster** listening to it as that's not how you run a restaurant. Its evident that whomever is running the place has no experience doing so, which again, is unfortunate as the place really has so much potential.
The food was decent. Best beans and toast we had had, the namesake sandwich was lackluster as was the scone. But the other food was good, especially the strawberry jam. It was super fresh and delicious.
As far as the atmosphere, it was cute, be warned tho, the chairs are one of the most uncomfortable things I have ever sat on next to metal chairs. So if you plan to stay a while, hopefully you can get a booth.
Unfortunately due to a multitude of of poor service instances, we wont be coming back. Which is a shame because I had high hopes for this place. However, if you are hankering for some English food or just want something different. It can't hurt to try it! Good luck and hopefully you have a better experience...
Read moreDrove from the south side since we heard good things. Lady at the front desk for some reason acted relived that we had a reservation. Decor did not have much of a British feel except for some paintings/posters and felt confused as to what the place wanted to be. For example I don’t know what the monkey overhanging our table to hit your head on had anything to do with Ireland and the lighting seemed way to bright for a dinner setting.
We had a reservation for 5 people. Started by ordering drinks and apps. Ordered scotch eggs. Our waiter came back to tell us they were out. Prob a good thing since it was 1 egg cut in half for the $12.95 price tag, but we knew that and still ordered 2. Did I say it was 7pm on a weekend night and not super busy?? Maybe 1/2 full, bar seats empty.
So we order different apps.
Drinks come(no beers on tap, even Guinness), and then we place dinner orders. 2 of the 5 items ordered were out. Waiter could have told us all of these things from the start BEFORE we looked at the menu and ordered since he informed us on the spot right after we spoke. Then he comes back to tell us another, now 5th item, is not available. Easy to say we are not delighted at all and would have gone somewhere else if we had known all of this prior to ordering, but we already had drinks and apps going so thought it was best to ride it out at that point. I settled for fish n chips, which is not what I had my eye on. The fish was average and tartar sauce was good, but it’s not worth the $25 price tag(no I don’t eat at long johns!). My husbands Shepard’s pie had good flavors, but hardly browned on the top. Obviously it’s not baked and is assembled and tossed under a salamander(for not long enough). Service in general was friendly, but slooow and it was not busy. We had cards out on the table ready to go and asked for checks and a box. Instead of checks they took much too long to bring out 2 free desserts to make up for all they were out of. Cool, and nice of them, but we really just wanted to leave at that point and it made things drag on even longer. Maybe ask next time if desserts are even wanted.
Not a good first experience and we will not be back.
And for the owners response, I never used the word pub. And quote from website A QUINTESSENTIALLY...
