There's a Japanese sushi place just a little north of this that I've been going to for years. My husband and I love sushi and have been to dozens of restaurants. We decided to try Hiro Hibachi Express for the first time because our usual doesn't have Hibachi "shows" (neither does this place) and I was looking for that and decided based on reviews to try this out regardless. Tl;dr It's not worth the visit but isn't inedible if you're invited to go with someone else. Just don't expect flavors and textures you're used to with sushi, there's just none, try a meal instead. Meals are mediocre/generic and sushi is bland.
I walked in to order take-out and the hostess/waitress who took my order was super! The atmosphere was just that of any restaurant with seating inside a strip mall, nothing worth mentioning good or bad. It was clean, it could have been a deli, a pizza place, generic. But I wasn't dining in so it didn't matter.
So the food... House salad with Ginger dressing: I love Ginger salad when it's done right. The flavor was almost there, better than some, not as good as many. The texture was off. Not smooth. Would I order it again? Sure
Miso soup: just like the salad, I love miso. This was salty. I didn't finish mine. Would not order again.
Teriyaki steak, white rice, and tempura veggies: it was good but the flavor and cook was something you could get better at a chain steak house. Would not go back craving their NY Strip. Tempura veggies and rice were bland, more or less what you'd expect. I don't think any place is known for their veggies and white rice so that's that, though the veggies should have had more flavor.
Scallop fried rice with veggies: fried rice was definitely sub-par, just flavorless. Veggies and scallops were delicious though but again, not something that I couldn't get just as good or better at a chain restaurant. I would order it again but I would not chose this place if I were craving scallops. Plenty of other places just as good.
Now for the sushi rolls... Nope. Not even worth trying.
I ordered 3 rolls and got a 6 piece California with the steak meal. Even the California roll was bland. Like, grocery store California is better. There was no flavor. Typically with sushi, I have to eat like 3 pieces well past the time I'm so full I could burst, these things just didn't hit the spot at all. The only flavor I found was the little drizzle of sauce on top of them. It was disappointing. The only exception (to being flavorless) was the crab rangoon roll. I love crab rangoon and have never seen it in sushi roll form so thought I'd try it. It was the worst of them. They put too much emphasis on the sweet n sour (so at least it has flavor) but was far too sweet and the only other flavor other than the sauce was cream cheese.
So would I go back on my own? Considering there is a place far superior right down the street, a place whose Ginger house salad and miso I literally crave and the fact that they have amazing sushi as well that seems like a bonus to the other really great food, no I wouldn't. But i wouldn't turn up my nose if someone else wanted it. The food is okay, it's not terrible, but when it comes to the flavors, this is probably the absolute bottom of the barrel of sushi places. It would be great for someone who is grossed out and you're trying to convince to try sushi for the first time because their rolls taste like white rice and Teriyaki drizzle so no texture or fish flavor. For those that love the flavor and texture of sushi, this place...

I didn't really think much of it - we all make mistakes and while I was upset that I had come home, gotten undressed, and had to go back in my pajamas only to return to COLD food because of it, I can be reasonable. The most recent time was today. My husband ordered for us and I checked the receipt and even mentioned how I wanted the woman checking out our order - who I believe was the SAME woman as the first mistake - to re-check the bag for everything, including the extra "yum-yum" sauce he added for an additional charge. Sure enough, she hurriedly went back to get a salad they forgot and pointed for me to help myself to our drinks. They were busy and it felt that I was hurried along but I trusted that she checked thoroughly after being reminded.. twice. I got home and when he opened his food and looked for it, sure enough, there was no sauce that we paid extra for. I was more than angry, I was livid. My husband pressed me to not bother calling or going back AGAIN for what THEY forgot.. I called anyway, after he begrudgingly ate his dinner and we watched a movie and afforded time to give this time for me to calm down. Either way, I still have a bad feeling now in regards to this place and while sitting down to eat is fine, ordering take out is an absolute failure after two times, one right after the other being a major let down.
My husband and I really enjoyed eating at this place.
I will say that the food here has a bit more 'kick' and spice to it than I'm used to. I will be honest and say that my husband and I are split on if we like it or not based on this factor alone.
It's a very 'hole in the wall' type of venue. Small for some, cozy for others. They serve their dinners and lunches on paper plates, offering chop sticks as well. It is a very good cross between expensive hibachi and something like Chinese take out without sacrificing quality.
They have very good sushi! It's made with a finesse that you would find from a more upscale restaurant as a much less impactful hit to your wallet and make it...
Read moreToday I decided at the last minute that I would order up lunch, I hadn't had Hiro in a few weeks and I had hankering for it. Typically I get the lunch special that includes two meats, it's either going to be steak and chicken or steak and shrimp, today it was steak and chicken. It comes with a heaping side of rice, vegetables and they include yum yum sauce. My husband's usual is chicken and shrimp, though he has tried the salmon before and it was delightful. I place my order on the website, typically my husband would go and pick up the food but today would be my first time going. When I arrived the young lady apologized as she had not submitted my order to the kitchen. I can tell how apologetic and sorry she was about this mishap. She went out of her way to rectify the situation. That wasn't in a rush, I certainly wasn't upset, mistakes happen. My encounter with this young lady was a treat, I must say, her customer service was amazing and my customer's experience even with a mishap was a pleasure, I would give her a 10/10. My food came out piping hot. She sent me on my way with a complimentary soup and beverage which she did not have to do. I will keep returning as long as the food is good and the customer service...
