We had an outstanding dining experience at Campo Azul recently. Arriving early at the lunch hour, we were among several other diners, but there was still plenty of seating. The host led us to an ample-sized booth where immediately after taking our seats, warm chips and salsa arrived at the table. The serving of salsa was very generous and some of the best we’ve had. Leonardo, our server, arrived a very few minutes later to take our drink order, describing some scrumptious sounding margaritas. Since this was only lunch, we opted for the house Margarita and placed an order for their queso dip. The Margaritas came quickly, delivered in large attractive goblets and garnished with a fresh slices of orange and lime. They were full of zest and lasted the entire meal. The queso arrived shortly after in a large bowl which we were unable to empty. This created a small problem with trying to decide between queso or salsa for each bite of chips. The solution was to simply eat too much of each. Leonardo abetted us by showing up with a second basket of chips before we finished the first. We had come to Campo Azul looking for a dish that would at least match our favorite fajitas that we’ve enjoyed for years at another local restaurant. Their Fajitas Campo Azul for two seemed like a close match, but we were wrong. While the ingredients were very close, the presentation, quality and deliciousness were far above what we had been used to. They were no doubt the best fajitas we have ever been served. We took our time feasting on the carnitas, steak, chicken, shrimp, and chorizo, which were garnished with bell peppers and onions, while we enjoyed the ambience of our well-designed surroundings. The proprietor, Samuel, was always in view checking with staff and patrons to ensure that all had a perfect experience, while Leonardo was close at hand in case we needed anything. So, if you haven’t guessed, we quickly have become Campo Azul fans and will be dining there often. We imagine it will be our first choice for entertaining family and friends when they come to visit. If you are looking for a high-end dining experience with Mexican cuisine, without breaking the budget, you’ll want to visit.
It’s been almost a year since my first review for Campo Azul and I felt it was time for an update. Eating out is not something we do often, so when we do, we want it to be a great experience. At Campo Azul there’s no need to worry about that. Every time we dine here we have a wonderful time. The dishes are delicious and perfectly prepared, the service is impeccable, and the restaurant is always inviting. The entire waitstaff makes you feel appreciated and take care that you have everything you want. Our favorite server, Heriberto always makes us feel like we are special, but he’s the special one. We’ve traveled extensively and we’ve eaten some very fine Mexican restaurants but Campo Azul easily tops them all. And if you’re wondering, yes, even their margaritas...
Read moreI read the many positive reviews of this place and chose to go there. I can't possibly say how disappointing my husband and I found this restaurant. Atmosphere was dark cobalt blue plastic seating and walls (I believe). Cold, boring and not happy colorful Mexican feeling. Two wonderful large paintings though which did help somewhat. Drinks unbelievably expensive; never seen such expensive drinks including Manhattan and Paris. Why? This place is in the middle of Florida and it's Mexican which is usually fairly reasonable. Don't understand those drinks. My first one was large and filled with the mixer that I had specifically said that I did not want and then they also put in Fresca or soda water or something as filler. Had requested Mezcal and they had none. Then, I had asked for just fresh lime, Triple Sec and Tequila and received something entirely different and had to pay for it. BAD drink! Over fried taco chips and watery liquid salsa. Then the food: Had a cheese quesadilla which was tiny, and made in one approx 7"-8" taco shell. It had flavorless cheese and was folded over. That was it. No onions, scallions, anything. Never saw or had such a boring one! Then the guacamole. Seemed to be packaged supermarket stuff (I may be incorrect but tasted like packaged glop) and not the great fresh avocados prepared at the table of which I had been told. I make my own great guac and their's tasted so ordinary and packaged. What happened to the made-at-the-table stuff of the rave reviews? Then we had Chile Rellanos. The poblanos, all 3 were flavorless as was the cheese stuffing. The egg batter was super-thick, about 1/2" of batter. No flavor in the recipe. Everything was extremely disappointing. I am very very use to eating Mexican food and it is my favorite along with Thai and Indian. We eat Mexican food all the time in Mexico but also in Sarasota where we live and in Boston area where we live. We eat it in St. Pete, in Taos, and in many many other places. We really did not like anything about the restaurant except for the paintings. It struck out in every possible way. Happy that so many people love the place. Sorry to be so negative and leave such a review but I felt it important to take the time to write this up. Luckily we were just going through so we don't have to rely on this place for our...
