If small mom-&-pop hole-in-the-wall greasy spoon-type places are your thing (as they are mine), look no further. Matt's is a small but bustling burger/hot dogs/ice cream joint with its own kind of charm. It's an old-fashioned set-up: you have limited space inside the building itself (mostly bar seating against the wall), or you have picnic tables just outside under the awning. The stoves face the open entrance so you can watch your order being made. the cashier I interacted with was terrific with barking orders to the staff and maintaining a friendly & welcoming demeanor with me. I came during their lunch rush (the line was out of the entrance), but I was waited on and served pretty quickly. I got a bacon cheeseburger w/fries. the burger was made well, tasted good, and the fries were great. The obvious comparison here is with Five Guys. While the burgers are roughly equal in quality, I have to say that Matt's fried win the prize, even lacking the famous Cajun seasoning. These fries were cooked to perfection -- not too soggy, not overly done. You also get a generous serving for what you order -- the cashier assured me a small would satisfy me and it did... I didn't have room to finish them all. The menu listed several different types of hot dogs with all of the expected toppings available, as well as a good amount of different ice cream options. I plan to return to try these items, as well. Overall, Matt's delivers on the simple, small town charm that its outward...
Read moreJust what we needed in San Carlos. I came in this afternoon and I'm trying to think of a reasonable length of time before I can go back to try another combo. Business was steady and the employees seemed in an upbeat mood ready to go. Sitting at the barstools with my boyfriend chatting we watched each customer being greeted as they walked in before they even reached the register as was I.
The food is prepared after the order is taken and promptly may I add. You'll never have to worry about cold fries or a soggy bun at Matt's.
It'll be hard not to fill up on a charred dog w/fries or onion ring combo but be sure to save some room for some of the best ice cream around- ROYAL SCOOP! I had a dog and split a large fry with chipotle ranch dipping sauce with my boyfriend. I just had to have some Health Bar afterwards since Ben&Jerry's discontinued it. This was the absolute best thing ever because its my fav!
Might I add; if you're feeling adventurous and up for a tasty hungry man challenge- go on and build the ultimate burger w/ mac & cheese & bacon. My boyfriend ordered it and looking at it made my mouth water. I just had to have a bite. Devine.
We will most likely...
Read moreWe love Matt’s red hots, it’s very close to home and we usually order from them once a week or every other week. The food is great! BUT the service SUCKS. The last 2 Saturdays my husband has called to make a to go order, and last weekend he was given attitude because he called at 8:00 and they close at 9? Asking if he was “going to be there soon cuz they’re closing soon”, fine whatever, we live 5 mins away, so my husband was there with PLENTY of time to spare to grab our food. Tonight my husband called, the phones were busy, since he works in the restaurant business as a cook, he knows how things work. So he decided to go in and place an order to go. Again, 7:50, they close at 9. They had very little to pick from and told my husband “we’re closing soon so this is what we got”. Not how a business should be ran in my opinion. If you close at 9, you serve until 9. If you wanna stop serving earlier, then close earlier. We both have been in the restaurant business for 10+ years, we know how things work. We love Matt’s, the food is great, but they need to hire more professional/mature/polite employees. Guess we’ll try again next...
