I had spent some time in El Salvador last year, and found myself having a craving for pupusas. For those who don't know what that is, I'm not going to waste time explaining it here, but it's a breakfast item where I was in El Salvador but it can be used as a snack all day as well. I also wanted a couple street tacos and I had heard that there's were excellent. I can confirm that all the rumors about Mi Carnal restaurant are true! Walking in I was immediately greeted and sort of attempted to Spanish that I knew with the man taking my order. I immediately ordered the free mix pupusas, and then one chicken in one steak Street taco. When my meal was prepared a few minutes later, the gentleman asked if I had ever eaten a pupusas before, to which I said yes I'd spend some time in San Salvador last year and fell in love with them. I will tell you right now that there pupusas is every bit as good, possibly even better than the pupusas I had in San Salvador and around El Salvador! That's law that goes with it tastes exactly the same, I actually thought his pupusas are possibly slightly a little larger than the ones I had in El Salvador, but they were every bit as good as excellent. I know they're not a particularly difficult thing to make but I have had bad ones! The three tacos were also fantastic. It comes with a red sauce and a green sauce, the green sauce is slightly hotter than the red sauce. Both tasted excellent, I went with the green sauce for both. The prices are not terrible at all, you can have a lunch meal there for about ten bucks if you do it correctly. I highly recommend coming and checking out the pupusas here! The street tacos are also excellent! I will...
Read moreWhy go to Chipotle for a meal when you can get an authentic burrito right down the road for less money!? It's just past Walmart on U.S. 1 South. They have Mexican barbacoa; sound familiar, Chipotle lovers? Mi Carnal is a "hole in the wall", but I mean that affectionately. It is home to a lovely local family (he's Mexican, she's El Salvadoran, I believe, and they have two older children who help run the place). The ambiance is dull, but the food shines. Get the mixed pupusas (a traditional El Salvadoran dish eaten with the hands) which comes with an excellent vinegary slaw called curtido, and a tomato salsa. Have you ever had a Mexican torta (sandwich)!? It rivals a Publix sub. The meat is where it's at, try the: Pastor (tender pork braised in pineapple), the campechano which is steak with chorizo for a little spicy kick, they have chicharron for those who like fried pork rinds. Of course, Micarnal serves chicken, pork loin, steak, as well. They also have a vegetarian menu featuring, soy meat, beans, and stuffed peppers. For me, the best indicator that this place is authentic is all the Hispanic faces you'll see eating inside; must taste like mom's. Only downside? Super-affordable Micarnal closes at 7pm. Check out this place's rating on TripAdvisor, Yelp, and Urban Spoon. It gets 4.5-5 stars across the board. Salud(oh, wait, they don't have beer or wine...so...fine...there are...
Read moreMy family and I were headed to Cantina Louie that happened to be closed when we got there. I looked up a different place and saw the pictures and reviews and my boyfriend is Salvadoran and saw the pupusas so we went straight there. It's not a huge restaurant and it's sort of hidden so you have to know where it is to find it. Everything we ordered is exactly our favorite dish. My mom ordered a Stuffed Poblano Pepper and she's super picky but she loved this one! My dad loves burritos and was very pleased with his. My niece and nephew both got one plate of chicken, rice, and beans and split which was perfect for both and they loved it. I got a Mexican Sausage Torta which is my favorite and I absolutely loved it! My boyfriend ordered another one for himself after he tried mine. We also got another order of pupusas to take back to the hotel. Don Carlos was super sweet and gave us a bit of history of the place and chatted with us for a while. On our last day at the beach, we called in an order of exactly everything we ate including the Pupusas for the way home. We got to the place a few minutes before they were closing bc we got lost and the traffic but they were super nice to wait for us til we got there with our order ready. We absolutely loved this place and we're definitely going back when we go to St....
