Came here for dinner with coworkers one day after work. A small, Greek, hole in the wall in Longwood, Florida. I've seen it many times, and never thought anything of it one way or the other. But now I see it, and I think banging Greek food.
I'm sure there's much more to Greek food than what the slew of Americanized Greek restaurants are showing us, but this is all I know, as of right now, it's what I've grown up with, and I have quality expectations, and this place met all of those expectations.
I roll in and get seated by the very friendly host. I get my sweet tea and start browsing the menu. I decide that it's time to get just a tour of the basics. Well, my basics anyway.
For an app, I got the Spanakopita (fresh spinach and cheese layered between flaky sheets of filo (or phyllo) dough). Very spinachy, just the right about of cheese, and the crispiest, flakiest filo you've ever had. Just really good. Not greasy at all.
For my entrée, I got the classic Gyro Platter (Greek oven potatoes). Love this, can't beat this. Soft pita, huge hunks of onion and tomatoes, so much meat that it literally cannot be stopped from falling out of the sandwich, and that wonderful tzatziki sauce slathered over everything. The potatoes were nice, too. Cooked all the way through.
I also got to try the lovely Moussaka (ground beef, potatoes and eggplant, baked with a cheese sauce). This is like a delicious Greek lasagna. Full of beef. Potatoes that weren't undercooked, and eggplant that wasn't overcooked, rare to see! And that cheesy sauce running over everything, making each bite perfect.
Overall, this was a great place, and if you want good Greek food, this place will satisfy you completely. Please, come here and give these fine folks...
Read moreWell, here is how it goes.... As a Greek! The server, she was great! We order the special Lamb chops served with rice, potatoes or carrots. I asked for carrots they came back saying that they run out of carrots, I asked "can you substitute with a small salad as I dont want to eat rice or potatoes". I was informed that this is a $3 up charge and I asked them since you ran out of carrots can you just make an exception since you ran out of carrots. They came back "it is the policy". I asked the management and comment was "if we do this with each order we will be loosing money" They ran out of carrots why can't keep clients happy? We came in with a good attitude and left with our wings cut off. We ordered grilled calamari, we got a dish with calamari straight out of a can, heated up, we send it back to get grilled but it took 5 min to get back ..... not what we expected , not good!. Have some music playing in the background! Some advice, share with locals the actual flavors of greek cuisine, give the cuisine the respect it deserves, show people our dishes and flavors. Don't Americanize the food, it needs to be authentic. People need to be aware that they get food they deserve. What we paid and what we got was not close to reality, way too expensive! I hope the ownership and management understands and take this as constructive feedback, I wish...
Read moreThis restaurant came higly recommended. Disappointing once we sat down. Visited during lunch time, took 20 minutes before we we acknowledged by an older lady(I presume she was the owner). After taking our order she came back 5 minutes later and asked for our order a second time. After a few seconds she realized she had already taken it. There was only 2 servers and noticed a big help wanted sign on the window. As an appetizer I ordered the raved fries octopus, consquently never arrived to the table. Did receive the runny hummus. Having lived in the middle east for over a decade this was by far the worst hummus I ever had. There was a whooping 8 small pieces being served with it. My family had ordered the gyros. Again they were a disappointment, way too salty. I do give credit for tne owner but recommend her hiring more help and taste the food that is being served. It is beautiful establishment but it not about looks but on the food itself. I have traveled the world, eaten at fine restaurants and hole in the wall's with better service and food. I am more then happy to return on my next visit. Hoping this is an off day for the proprietor and this be an wakening for her long time business in the community. I do wish her all the best of luck. ...
