disappointed. here's what happened. I came here tonight to try the pork soup dumplings, beef fried rice, sticky rice ball in liquor soup, and chicken herbal soup, but our main issue ended up being the dumplings.
pork soup dumplings-- 0/10. ALL six of the dumplings oozed out slimy and liquified-looking pork that tasted as unappetizing as it looks. (see photos). on first bite, the meat was runny - the pork literally tasted uncomfortably slimy, the temperature of the soup contained within was actually cold/lukewarm, and left runny streaks on my napkin. me and my partner were excited at first to try BUT this dish ended up making us question its preparation/cooking methods that ultimately felt too uncomfortable to actually finish. here's the main thing: i'm chinese and usually LOVE soup dumplings, but being honest, these were probably the most questionable ones we had and tasted objectively disgusting that i can't see anyone actually enjoying. my suggestion: quality check these dumplings, fix its issues that is causing the slimey and runny taste and most of all, have the kitchen/staff taste test until it tastes right again.
beef fried rice-- 5/10. decent portions. the rice itself felt a little bit hard and undercooked. temperature was lukewarm and didn't taste freshly made. beef was overly chewy in a cheap way. seasoning was lackluster. forgettable flavor.
sticky rice in liquor soup-- 3/10. decent portions. the liquor part of the soup just ended up not a taste we enjoyed - overly sweet soup mixed with overly soggy/boiled sticky rice. i recognize this dish might just be not within my personal preference. others might enjoy this dish, so you might like it. it's just not to my palate nor my partner's.
chicken herbal soup-- 8/10. this soup was surprisingly maybe the only that "saved" the dinner for us. the soup had generous portions served in a decently large cup. the broth tasted flavorful, included four pieces of chicken that was pretty juicy, two dates that added to the overall taste of the broth. REALLY nice dish and would have again.
in conclusion, this felt like a hit-and-miss experience, which i feel bad about since we honestly wanted to have a good time here and there were just more misses than actual hits. and while the herbal soup tasted fantastic, it was overshadowed by the disappointment of our other dishes. it was...
Read moreA good friend of mine, who lives in Fort Lee, had pointed this restaurant out and told me it was really good. I was not in the mood to cook today, so I decided to just go grab a bite. I went on a Thursday night, at about 5 PM. They were not full, but they had a nice brisk business going for being an early hour on a weekday.
I had never tasted soup dumplings before. Today was my first time. Now I understand what all the fuss is about! Those soup dumplings are addictive because I am already thinking about going back. This place has really good food! I ended up getting the pork & crab soup dumplings, cucumber salad, and the beef with scallions (the beef was tender and flavorful). Everything was delicious and they give you generous portions. ( I left the restaurant feeling like a Thanksgiving turkey: stuffed!!).
While I was dining, I took a look around the other customers in the dining room. Out of 10 tables that were occupied, six of those had Chinese customers. Another table had just emptied out a few minutes before and they were also Chinese. To me, that speaks volumes about the quality of the food when many of their customers are Chinese. I have never seen that in any other Chinese restaurant outside of Chinatown in New York. This place is definitely doing something right.
I loved that the service was quick and the staff was friendly. The prices are very reasonable. It is BYOB so I will go prepared next time. I had no difficulty parking on a meter right outside the entrance and there were other meters available. It wasn’t until I got home later on today that I found out that they have a parking lot available for the customers.
This will now become my new go to Chinese restaurant. I have an outing planned with a friend next Thursday, so I may be going back sooner than I expected. Give this place a try, I guarantee you it will...
Read moreI was seeing a double feature at The Barrymore and my friend loves this place so I decided to give it a try. Getting a table was almost like that one Seinfeld episode. We were given a paper menu while we waited and asked to check off what we wanted, which I thought was odd. I'm 36 and I've never had that happen before in a restaurant. We were seated after about 25 minutes (party of three) and I was a bit taken aback that the food was just okay. Judging by the amount of people waiting outside I honestly thought it would have been a lot better, but it was basically pretty plain. Also, the food didn't really come out in any particular order, it just seemed like when something was finished cooking it was brought to the table. My friends were about finished by the time I received my entree so I ended up taking most of it to go. The service itself was pretty cold. Dishes were removed promptly and water was filled but they worked more like a Nascar pit crew than people in the hospitality industry who work for tips. Honestly, I think this place could be special if they didn't try to get as many people in and out as humanly possible. I worked in the restaurant industry for 18 years and unfortunately sometimes you have to know what you can and cannot handle before quality starts to suffer, and adjust accordingly. As we were walking out I heard a teenage girl say very loudly "That wasn't even that good, why did we wait?!" and her mom shushed her. The chuckle I got from that interaction was more enjoyable than the rest of my experience at Soup Dumping Plus...
