After seeing the many funny, offensive, and sometimes embarrassing messages on the marquee, I started to wonder if the food was any good. After witnessing the reputation of the ownership, I wondered if service was good. The answer to both is a resounding, "it's okay."
I ate with my family of 3: me, my wife and our 3-year-old. We arrived near noon, but were handed a breakfast menu. Not a big deal to me, but reading the menu from Door Dash gives me the impression that the full menu (which includes other traditional diner food) is available all day. If that's true, I would have liked seeing it. We were seated quickly (around noon on a Friday), and our drink order was taken before we were even seated. While this seems very hospitable, there was an air of brusqueness and hurry that I didn't appreciate. Indeed, a sign that says "sit down, eat, and get the hell out" would not be out of place. (Though I didn't see a sign that says that.)
The menu for breakfast is standard diner affair. Omelettes, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, eggs, sausage, bacon and more. Crêpes being a notable surprise. The selection is nice enough without being too expansive. Prices are good as well, with few items exceeding $12 (following the Coronavirus Pandemic, that's fairly cheap.) We were not given a kid's menu, although their website reveals a kid's menu. Perhaps I could have asked for one, but I expect the restaurant to readily and freely inform us of our options. I should not be required to enter a state of discovery and investigation. It wasn't hard to find something my toddler would eat, but the kid's menu does provide better options.
Taking of our order and delivery of food was quick and simple, but this is where things went a bit off. While the food was good and well made (it's diner food, if I may be reductive), the descriptions on the menu were a bit off. My wife ordered the Chocolate Lover's Crêpes, which come covered in chocolate, strawberries and whipped cream. I know it's our reading that could have been better, since the strawberries are also described as 'glazed' but I would argue it is a strawberry sauce (or perhaps a strawberry glaze). It's very pedantic, and you can blame us for not reading it correctly, but we expected fresh fruit and got something else. Again, you can say it's our fault but the menu could be written better. We ordered a side of the home fries, expecting to get something akin to either potatoes found in a hash or maybe even French Fries, but instead we got pan fried scalloped potatoes. Arguably not home fries. I ordered the Belgium Waffle which is described as "Dusted with Powdered Sugar, Syrup, and Whipped Cream." I expected it to be a pretty basically dressed Belgium Waffle was actually a plain large waffle served with a bottle of syrup and butter on the side. No powdered sugar or whipped cream. Not awful, it's just not served as described.
After our food was served, service came to an abrupt end. While not surprising at a chain restaurant, this being an American style diner, it was a bit rude. Our server checked on us to give us the bill and immediately left us alone, without looking at us or even directly addressing us. None of the wait staff were especially pleasant or especially rude, but more rude than pleasant.
In fact, the whole establishment is built on the premise of rudeness. Rudeness is advertised not just on the marquee, but there are statues and signs inside that are also rude. There is a display case (the kind meant for confectioneries) filled with printouts of rude 'memes' as well as Sweeties Diner tshirts. The establishment scares you into submission, perhaps asking you to join in on the rudeness, but actually stopped me from being a bit more forward. Typically I might ask if there is a kids menu or a lunch menu, but with the expectation of getting a rude response I was more hesitant. The rush-you-in-rush-you-out attitude was also a bit off-putting. The food is a good value and well made, if not always exactly...
Read moreThe food was average diner food, not bad, but just diner food as expected, so no points off there. Our waitress was pleasant, but sometimes that just isn't enough (read on).
I had hamburger with swiss & shrooms + fresh lettuce/tomatos/onions (score 5 of 10), French fries (fresh & crispy normal 6 of 10), and a large sweet tea (my taste buds said not brewed unfortunately, but not terrible, so 3 of 10).
My guest had a Monte Cristo Sandwich and coffee. I asked and they said, "It was ok." We shared Jalapeno Poppers (ie. little jalapeno peppers deep fried in batter, so 5 of 10). They took the extras home for later.
It was maybe 1pm but not many customers were in there (and there was a stadium college graduation in town). We were never offered refills on our drinks. Silverware was provided but there were no paper napkins on the table (I went up and retrieved some from the counter). No desert was offered.
Side-note: I used the men's room and at first entry it appeared ok, but I found so much urine on the floor in front of the urinal, that I used a stall instead, which was not much of an improvement (I'll be kind and just say that I hope that they were short staffed that day). Now here's what earned them one star from me:
If I had seen that "KISS OUR A_S" sign outside, accessorized with an American Flag just for extra eye catching purposes, I wouldn't have stopped there. Confirming my opinion of "tastelessness served here", today when I zoomed in on a pic here on this Google MAPS page, I see an earlier pic of that sign displaying "AIN'T THIS SOME SH_T". Understand that I'm no saint and use these words occasionally (in speech) too. But, these are I estimate 8" letters, clearly visible to everyone who drives by (including children), only feet from historic US Highway 1 that runs from Maine to Key West. What a way to greet people coming into to South Florida? So I think it's safe to assume that the management opines that it's perfectly acceptable to serve up publically visible profanity on a regular basis.
Parting moments: If you're starving and can't find anything else open, they serve American diner food here. That said, we certainly didn't get a warm fuzzy feeling that they wanted us to stay longer or come back, ever. I have no problem with...
Read moreThe worst dinner, the worst experience ever and I travel the world, I was literally kick out; I was drinking my coffee for too long and not ordering quick enough for the waiters… it’s a shame… so back to waffle house for me… I can sit and write in my journal and order when I am ready.. the staff here is 100% raciest… why ? No one came to my defence; they team up with the others and kick me out, this shows the mood and character of this business, I was well dress, the place was empty, I told them I would order momentarily. The only thing I could think of is racism. Words from staff to me:
“ Get out this is not a library” “ you have been sitting for too long and not ordering food only drinking coffee” “Move your ass” “I need to make money” “I don’t give a shit” I could not make theses things up; this was about 8am, no one was there.
