Was craving fried chicken and decided to try out Gus's World Famous. It's a quaint place. Friendly greetings by staff. Got seated and looked over the menu. Decided to order some fried green tomatoes as an app. A 3 piece dark meat combo, and their wing special. First note. There is a $0.50 charge for switching sides... not even some premium side, just any other sides besides baked beans and slaw. So rather than order a la carte sides, we made some changes. Ordered mac and potato salad. Since I ordered wings, I wanted a side of ranch. Sauces do not come with the meal. They are $0.55 ea. We got our app. The batter was very tasty and even though i dont think tomatoes are necessarily in season. These tomatoes were soft and goopy. Bit into one and it felt like a hot booger in my mouth. I stopped after that. The tomatoes were way too ripe had an awful texture. But the batter was good. When we got our main dishes, the wings were stone cold. Not even warm, just room temp sat in some bin wings. I did however get an extra wing, but that doesn't really make a difference as they were all still cold. The batter on the wings was tasty but overly salty. The mac and cheese had good flavor, but was also cold. They sprinkled some shredded cheese that didn't even melt. The potato salad was probably the best tasting thing we ate. The chicken thighs were cooked fresh (thankfully) but we did get fairly small pieces. For the price that we paid, it's a little underwhelming. The batter again was flavorful but overly salty. The baked beans were very basic. Tasted like canned Heinz beans and the slaw while fresh, was lacking flavor. Just very bland and missing something, (added pepper, didn't help) Overall, it was a pretty mediocre experience (food wise). Food isn't even close to something that could be considered World Famous. It's was fair, at best. After this experience, there isn't anything that would draw me back to visit. Wish I would've come in their hey day.

Let me get straight to the point—my experience at Gus’s Famous Fried Chicken was frustrating and disappointing. I ordered the 4-piece wing special with mac and cheese and fries. But before I even got to the food, I witnessed something that really turned my stomach. One of the employees, wearing gloves, rubbed his nose multiple times—then continued handling food without changing gloves. I voiced my concern to another staff member, who did go speak to him. But instead of taking accountability, the employee walked by the food prep area and slapped his dirty gloves down on the counter where food was being sent out. It was careless and unhygienic, and it took away any appetite I had. As for the food: Fries: Plain, underseasoned, and forgettable. Honestly, I could’ve made better fries at home with a frozen bag and an air fryer. 1 out of 5. Mac & Cheese: It tasted like a mix of Kraft and homemade, but with almost no seasoning outside of what looked like paprika on top. Just bland. 2 out of 5. Chicken: The seasoning was completely off incredibly salty to the point where it was hard to eat. Not sure if it was a one-off issue, but it didn’t leave a good impression. 2 out of 5. Between the lack of basic hygiene and the underwhelming food, I left disappointed and unlikely to return. This experience fell far short of what I expected from a place that calls itself “famous.”

Saw this restaurant chain featured on TV and decided to make the 170mi/2.5hr drive during an open weekend from Longview to Forth Worth. The moniker “world famous” is nothing more than just the name of the establishment as the food I got was underwhelmingly sub par. So much so that other chains like Bojangles, Raising Cane or Popeyes would make for a much tastier alternative. It was very hard to find parking at the venue, spent 10-15mins circling. You run the risk of getting towed or risk parking at the nearby residential streets. Upon walking in, the restaurant is very small, cramped and run down. Food is served on small paper plates with plastic utensils wrapped in single ply tissue. Their small tables matched their small chairs; tops covered with tattered plastic table cloth. 12noon on a Saturday (just 1 hour after their opening) and their bathroom was already filthy; used and torn toilet paper littered on the floor. The mac and cheese is sharper than traditional. The Not Your Father’s Root Beer float is served in a plastic cup. Their potato salad is decent. An option to give zero stars would enable me to accurately rate my experience as there was NOTHING world famous about the food I got and the experience I had. Bottom line: would not recommend and would not go back.

A year ago, I visited Gus' for the first time and had a disappointing experience. The manager had sent me a $25 gift card as a hope for a better experience when I returned. Well, I finally returned on Super bowl Sunday to order 16 pieces of fried chicken to go. 16 pieces is plenty for a party, but it is also pricey. At $35.95, it's actually slightly more expensive than the 12 piece for $26.95. Even though we had a gift card that management was so kind to give, it still felt really expensive.

The cashier said it would be a 10 minute wait for the chicken, and it ended up being 30 seconds! That was seriously fast service. As we drove home, the smell was intoxicating. I tried it while it was hot and fresh and it was really good. I think where we went wrong last time was choosing white meat. You really need to get dark meat for the inside to be juicy and full of flavor. The skin was really nice and crispy and I didn't have any fatty bits. Some pieces were spicier than others and although I was okay with that, what about consistency?

Our to go order came with 4 pieces of white bread (not sure why people eat white bread with this chicken. It's not that hot) and sauces. Fun tips: leave the white bread out over night and make French toast in the morning and/or make chicken and waffles with your leftover chicken!

Overall, I'm torn as to what to give this place. The chicken was good, but it's very expensive and still, if I want a really good fried chicken, I lean toward rosemary and other spices rather than just hot chicken. The atmosphere is underwhelming, which is what some people love about it, like your grandma's kitchen, but that's not my cup of tea. So here I am, giving Gus' another 3 star review because it's unlikely for me to return. If Google allowed, I'd give them a 3.5 due to crazy fast service and...
