Classic BBQ spot with charm and great service
My husband and I visited Sammies BBQ for the first time for a late lunch. The restaurant has been around since 1946, and while it could use some updates, I really appreciated its old-school charm. It has a down-to-earth vibe, and it’s clear they have a loyal group of regulars—which is always a good sign.
We both ordered the two-meat plate with two sides. I had ribs and brisket with a side salad and coleslaw. My husband chose brisket and ham, with coleslaw and fried okra. The ribs and brisket were pretty good, though both were a bit on the dry side—especially mine. His brisket was more moist, and the ham was delicious: thick-cut and full of flavor.
The sides were hit or miss. We were disappointed with the coleslaw—it’s vinegar-based rather than mayonnaise, and it had too much vinegar and salt. A touch of sugar could’ve helped balance it out. The fried okra batter lacked seasoning, so we wouldn’t order that again. If you enjoy vinegar-style slaw, this might be your thing, but it wasn’t ours.
We also weren’t fans of their BBQ sauces. They offer two kinds, but both were thin and lacked the bold flavor we usually look for. On the plus side, they do offer daily specials, and the portion sizes were generous—we had plenty of leftovers. The price was reasonable and fair for the amount of food we received. I wish that they would served the foods on a bigger plate as it was hard to maneuver the food around on a small plate.
Overall, our experience was fairly good. The service was excellent, and we’re planning to return to try their pork...
Read moreI can't believe I haven't been here since the new owners bought Sammy's. Sammy's has been a part of our family dining and events since the early 60s. There was nothing better than Sammy's chopped BBQ with thier amazing unrivaled BBQ sauce. Then their fries and rings ...Best on the planet as far as I was concerned. It broke my heart to learn they sold years ago and I had heard they changed all the recipes so we never went back. Well, I could completely kick myself now. I never thought I would say this... BUT...the new owners have seriously taken Sammy's to the next level. BRAVO! Your chopped BBQ just might top the original and just became my favorite. Your Sammy's original BBQ sauce was not quite the original but it actually might be even better too. The onion rings were identical and brought back some great memories of birthday , graduation, and fun family celebrations spent at Sammy's over my life time. There was more people there than I ever saw those last 6 years when the original owners had Sammy's. Five stars all the way around. We had great service too! I need to make up for all these lost years and yes...I'm seriously kicking myself for holding out so long. I travel all over the country and get to try the best BBQ. I am so excited Sammy's is in my city! Will be going back...
Read moreI guess I had too high of expectations for the newly reopened Sammie's. I went to Sammie's as a kid with my parents and I continued to go into my aduld life. I loved the old place, it was the best. But now that they've reopened it, it is not half as good. They say they have the original Sammie's BBQ sauce, it is not the same. It taste good but IT IS NOT THE ORIGINAL. I had the chopped plate with 2 sides. Portion of meat was not that large. I got potato salad and the "Sammie's vinegar coleslaw" neither we're impressive. I was disappointed with the amount of fat I had to pick out of my meat. The old Sammie's must have just trimmed theirs better. It cost $14 for that. Kinda high for the amount of food it comes with. My husband got the 2 meat and 2 side plate for $16. He enjoyed his meal but very skimpy for the price. Also, they serve their beer out if the bottle instead of a frosted glass. 😑 No longer coldest beer in Fort Worth. The chopped brisket was tasty but I personally do not think this new ownership/restaurant should be able call themselves Sammie's. It nothing like it or comparable. I won't...
