On the way back from Whitetail Ski Resort, my friends and I were trying to decide on a place to eat dinner. Browsing Yelp, I came across Black Hog in Frederick with 4 stars and over 140 reviews. Looked pretty promising especially after reading the review by Corey W, whose review states that he's from Texas and cooks on a BBQ competition team but still thinks Black Hog is good.
All of us (there were 4 couples) decided to order the BHB Triple Dinner plate/platter. It's such a steal. For only $19.39 (plate) or $21.09, you get four ribs, 1/4 chicken (basically two chicken legs), and one meat of your choice. If you get the plate, it comes with one side of your choice and cornbread. If you get the platter, it comes with two sides of your choice and cornbread. My boyfriend and I ordered the BHB Triple Dinner platter with Carolina chopped BBQ and got the mac n cheese and potato salad sides. We also ordered a pulled pork sandwich since there were so many raving reviews about it.
Fast forward and our food arrives. Service was terrific by the way. We ended up being the last table there but the server never pushed us to hurry or leave. She was very accommodating too; apparently there wasn't any cornbread at first and she said she'd try to get orders of rice for everyone. In the end, we all got cornbread but she really tried to make up for it initially.
The ribs, chicken, and Carolina chopped BBQ were all delicious. I really liked the dry rub on the chicken - so, so good. The meat is tender and there were plenty of various sauces to try. Sides were good too. Everything was just on point.
It's hard to find decent BBQ in the DC-MD-VA area but Black Hog really hits home for quality southern BBQ. It's a bit far if you're in the DMV area (~1 hr) but worth the drive if you're craving that good BBQ you can't get anywhere in the city. I'm definitely coming back...
Read moreAtmosphere: Really enjoyed the inside of the establishment, especially the neon sign on one side of the wall making you aware of what's available. There is a good amount of seating area for eating and pretty spacious even though many places to sit. I liked how both the pick up orders and bar area are split up and across from each other.
Service: Their service was impeccable and was seated promptly. Having never been to this establishment the waitress offer some great recommendations and foods we had to try out, even though everything looked good.
Quality: Where do I begin, coming from Texas, we take our BBQ very serious and even the waitress was worried at first but was certain we wouldn't be disappointed. She mentioned that I should try the Arkansas Brisket because the amount of flavor it had and would definitely be worth it. Being our first time there, she recommended the Dry Rub Jumbo Wings as a starter and they were really good, just the right amount of rub and the size of the wings were just like the menu stated. Before we left, she asked how it all stacked up and we told her that it was amazing and wished we could try everything. She said she should have recommended the Triple Meat Mofo Sandwich and Luke's Chili, in which later in the week I got and highly recommend because the amount of flavor and quantity of each meal.
Was in town for work and normally don't like to go the same restaurant twice but had to make an exception for this one due to how amazing everything was. Highly recommend and you won't be...
Read moreFirst time at Black Hog and the service was excellent! Chad was the best server to have as my first impression of the restaurant. He was very kind and knowledgeable of the menu. He gave great suggestions and was humorous. I’m a southerner so the food left a little to be desired for my taste. The taco appetizer and ribs were great but the sides and dessert were subpar. The collards were either undercooked or actually turnip greens. The texture was just not right for me. The potato salad was average and the Mac n cheese had flour in it to thicken it (roux) which gave it a weird consistency that is odd for what I’ve had from other BarbQue locations. I’m used to seeing a more creamy texture. Also the most offensive was the banana pudding without the BANANAS! Basically a $5 bowl of boxed pudding with vanilla wafer crumbs. Smh I will never understand this.
Overall not a bad experience but would not consider a repeat visit for the food at least. The food was...
