If you are interested in the Civil War and/or medicine, then this museum to visit. It is quit small and can be viewed in about one, to one and a half hours. If you read EVERYTHING, like me then two and a half hours is needed, (keep in mind that I am a slow reader). The museum has some very good artifacts. The information is also detailed and informative. However this museum suffers from what ALL Pennsylvania museums suffer from; mannequins! I have been to many museums in my life but I have never seen such a prolific use of mannequins like I see here. But all in all some of them were ell worth it and added to the descriptions. There are some drawings, diagrams, photos and even mannequins that may be disturbing to look at. So tread lightly or send out a scout. The gift shop could be better stocked with more appropriate items. The last part of the museum has a time line of military medicine throughout history. There is even a mannequin of a modern day army medic; a nice touch. The employees are helpful and the bathrooms are clean....
Read moreI can't believe I've lived in Northern Virginia for 3.5 years and had not been to Frederick, Maryland yet....this place is awesome. My husband and I love all the Revolutionary and Civil War history in this area. The National Museum of Civil War Medicine did not disappoint, considering this museum was started from a private collection, I was really impressed with the size and detail of the exhibits. I also really liked the soldiers' perspective provided through letters....one soldier whose letters were on display was from my homestate of Maine; so that made an immediate connection for me. The staff are super friendly and one was dressed for the period and really knowledgeable on modern medicine's derivations from the Civil War....such as the advent of hospital campuses. Definitely check this place out the next time you are in Frederick. Oh, and look for a Groupon to save a few bucks. Then go across the street to the Tenth Ward Distillery to try some delicious...
Read moreUnimposing from the outside, this 2 story museum is beautifully organized, with an excellent diversity of exhibits, following the Civil War medical developments by time and subject matter. They've managed to create displays that engage both children (shorter plaques, hands-on exhibits, guess the answer panels, a scavenger hunt), and adults (longer information, lots of letter excerpts, some pretty unusual and grim photos). The museum is located right in downtown Frederick, with an inexpensive parking garage right behind it, and multiple tea shops, restaurants, vintage/thrift shops, specialty chocolate/toy/comic/gift shops surrounding it. We meant to spend 1 hour in the museum, and instead spent almost 3 hrs without realizing it!!! My kids never even complained! It's...
