I was brought up on Hobby's in Newark, a place I don't get to nearly often enough anymore. In recent years I mostly went to Jesse & David's, but unfortunately they closed up last year. So I asked around & heard about Fred & Murry's Kosher Deli. For my first time I got 2 sloppy joe's, 2 sloppy jr's, 2 latkes, mush/barley soup & pea soup, boiled kreplach, derma and a couple of potato knishes.
The sloppys were tasty enough, but a bit short of meat for the price. For what I paid, I expected a more overstuffed sammich. The soups were bland, in fact the pea was just plain bad. I gave away my kreplach- way too soggy. The derma was 'ok' I guess. I'm not a big knish person, but those around me said they were very good. But the star of the meal was the potato pancakes, they were really excellent. I did appreciate the extra russian dressing, mustard and other condiments we received without asking. And I asked for tip tongue on one of the sloppys instead of roast beef and I was very pleased with the cut.
I wasn't put off at all by what didn't work. And I'm not going to compare this restaurant to some of the famous ones in NYC & Brooklyn the way some snobs do-- every place stands on its own merits. I'll go back to F&M's. When I do, I'll just get a different sandwich for a more reasonable cost (maybe hot pastr or tongue on rye), with latkes on the side & a Dr Brown's. That'll be a good meal.
I ordered a turkey on rye with russian dressing and coleslaw. The turkey was very good, deli style kosher turkey. The rye bread really stood out in particular. It was as fresh as rye bread can get and the flavor was a six out of five stars! This is real rye bread! Coleslaw was a little light in portion but what it lacked in quantity, it made up for in quality. The Russian dressing was a nice addition and really brought the whole sandwich together. Overall, the size of the sandwich was generous, all of the flavors were there and if they had used a home roasted turkey, this sandwich would be labeled as good as it can get. Four out of five stars. Also, the pickles had a rather unique flavor to them. More of a half sour as apposed to a garlic flavor, but with a floral kind of accent to them which really gave this sandwich a refreshing experience. Five stars on the pickles! The knish was very good. The spinach knish was very fresh, with the right combination of spinach to potato ratio, the outer dough was perfectly cooked, light but flavorful so give it a try. Four stars for sure! Also, they give a cup of stone ground mustard to dip the knish in which was very good quality. Bold, spicy and overall, a wonderful compliment to the experience. My final thoughts are, Fred and Murrays is the real deal for sure. five stars!
I had to edit this review as my initial critique said boar's head meat. It is not. That being said , this was very good, quality meat and I cannot stress how much I enjoy this place! There is no substitution for fresh and this place brings it! Please don't hesitate to...
Read moreTo all the NAYSAYERS AND MISERABLE PEOPLE OF THIS WORLD, Let me eduamafacte you once and for all, this is the BEST DELI IN THIS AREA HANDS DOWN!!! It's NOT OVERPRICED LIKE HARROLDS, AND WILL NOT MAKE YOU OBESE LIKE HARROLDS!!! Sure, depending on where you live, you can go elsewhere, PA, NJ, NY & FL, but to find a caring staff lead by Chris the manager, GOOD LUCK FINDING THAT ANYWHERE, AND I MEAN ANYWHERE!!!
I worked for the fast food industry with all the big name companies and met top executives for Chick Fil A, McDonald's, Taco Bell, Dunkin' to name a few and have traveled all over the United States doing demographic surveys while trying mom and pop restaurants along the way. I'm a world traveler, originally from Israel and know a thing or two about great food and customer service! If you have a bad experience, which we all do at times, including me, try NOT to take it out on these individuals, but call your credit card companies, owners of establishments or just don't come back. Your negative feedbacks really don't tell a complete story of the establishment and the people that work at said establishments trying to make a living. Trust me, you'll never be 100% satisfied, and if you get 75-80% of what you set out to hopefully get, consider it a huge win in today's times!!!
I for one, will be buying here many, many more times in the near future, and yes, I had a few minor problems, but the manager Chris, took care of them for me right away, and wasn't your typical defender of the...
