Bun Appétit Donuts — Restaurant in Fremont

Wow, hands down one of the best, new coffee shops in the Bay Area! Come here and you'll fall in love with the vibes, their coffee and donuts.

Let's start with parking. There is plenty of it as the coffee shop is located in a new apartment complex that has retail space on the ground level. Once you walk into the coffee house you are greeted by high ceilings, bright walls and a lot of light due the big windows all around. They kept things fairly minimalistic but still artsy. I love their wooden tables (real, thick wood!) and wooden chairs. It adds a cozy contrast to the white walls.

Seating usually fills up quickly as the place overall offers great space to work. Their WiFi password is 37120bun and the internet is stable and fast. It gets noise at times since a lot of families come here, but usually that's just a temporary distraction.

Let's talk coffee: They serve Verve coffee and the barista is very serious about getting you a perfect Flat White made. Since this place is always busy, they seem to burn through a lot of coffee beans which is great since they seem to open a new pack of freshly roasted beans every hour.

And then there are of course the donuts. They are out of this world. Seriously. They are absolutely amazing. Bacon or marshmallows on or inside your donut? They know how to do it right without making the whole thing too fatty or sweet. Each of their donuts is really a piece of art in itself. I can't imagine how much time and effort it must take to create one - and yes, it's all hand work. If they run out, they run out which in fact happens if you come here after work.

While their donuts are amazing, I love their Vanilla filled buns even more. They are on the very top drawer and the dough is so fluffy and soft that you can't resist. The vanilla cream is nothing like you ever tasted before. It's soft, not too sweet and the vanilla is not overpowering. In fact, this tastes just like the vanilla cream my German grandma used to make for a home made cake. If you take these vanilla buns to Paris or anywhere in Europe, people would certainly approve.

Folks working here are mostly friendly, but the cashier lady sometimes gets slightly stressed out it seems when there are too many people.

-Utterly Blueberry (Seasonal) 24 hour raised brioche filled w/blueberry compote infused cream, covered in blueberry white chocolate, topped w/ chantilly cream, fresh blueberries & herbs. ($7.50) •it was pretty good - reminds me of a blueberry muffin but in dounut form - the aesthetic was also super cute

-Peach Mango Palmer (Seasonal) 24 hour raised brioche, filled w/diced peach mascarpone cream, fresh mango glaze, topped w/white chocolate flower, edible butterfly wafer paper and Ciroq peach vodka pipette. ($7.50) •i really liked it bc it reminds me of jolliebee's peach mango pie 😌

-Lemon Elderflower 24 hour raised brioche, elderflower glaze, filled w/ tangy sweet lemon curd, topped w/ torched honey meringue and lemon zest. ($7.00) •the initial taste was good but it was a bit too tangy and zesty for me but if you enjoy lemon meringue then yall would like this

-Tiramisu (Popular) 24 hr raised brioche, filled w/mascarpone cream, vanilla bean glazed, dusted with Verve espresso powder and Valrhona cocoa powder. ($6.00) •def taste like what i thought a tiramisu would taste like but in donut form and wow i loved the filling inside w/the mascarpone cream

-Injeolmi Inspired by Korean sweet rice cake. 24 hour raised brioche, filled with roasted soy bean cream and mochi pieces, vanilla bean glazed, coated with soy bean powder and topped with candied almonds. Subtle, toasty and nutty. ($6.00) •this isnt my fav bc it has fillings thts not my fav but this is the one my mom loves and something she'd wanna get again

Saturday was my first foray into Bun Appetit. I was intrigued by their savory donut topped with the everything but the bagel seasoning and filled with chive-flavored cream cheese.

I wasn't able to reserve my items since I missed the cutoff time. The matcha cube was also on my "must-try" list. They were sold out by the time I arrived just past noon on a Saturday. Actually, 1/3 of the items were already gone from the display case. I also ordered the cheddar jalapeño biscuit, passion fruit mochi donut, London Fog, and a mocha.

The London Fog was pretty bland. I was hoping there'll be some sweetener added. I should've asked first. To top it off, the lid popped off and spilled into the tray in my car. Very dismayed when I discovered later. The mocha was yummy. Perfect amount of sweetness.

The savory items were my favorite! The everything bagel donut was sublime! What wonderful texture in both the donut and the cream cheese chive filling! The filling was light and fluffy. What a unique item executed so perfectly. I love the combination of cheddar and jalapeño. This biscuit has the right amount of heat and a beautiful crust attributed to a texture similar to scones.

We weren't a fan of the passion fruit mochi donut. With our obsession with Third Culture (the OG to the mochi donut game), we didn't think the Bun Appetit version did not compare in glaze flavor and texture. The fruit flavor was fairly sour with a hint of coconut. The mochi was mushy and dense, almost as if it was undercooked and dough didn't rise enough. Maybe I have the Third Culture bias but they are my gold standard.

There wasn't a line when I arrived but it grew past the door by the time my drinks were ready.

I'm giving the café/bakery 4 stars because I enjoyed 3 out of the 5 items. I can't wait to get the everything bagel donut and cheddar jalapeño biscuit again! Will be more prepared next time so we can try the...
