We went on a Saturday for our anniversary and we are still talking about how beautiful a dining experience it was. The whole restaurant is full of pale wood and brick, conjuring a aboraceous retreat from city life. The waiters wear jeans and blue shirts of chambré or calico, making diners feel as if they’ve stumbled upon a commune of superlatively accommodating lumberjacks. Our waiter, Kara, was very helpful and supportive, like a therapist or grandmother, supplying little kindnesses like topping off a water while she was answering our questions. She always said “my pleasure” to our anxious chatter and questions, creating a promise of true belonging which the luxurious food then fulfilled. Butter lettuce salad A light salad, the Gorgonzola vinaigrette dressing was complex and bitter, offering first the mustiness of the cheese followed by creamy, peppery flavors. The onions were sweet and pungent, cutting through the fatty porcine savor of the bacon. The lettuce itself was exceedingly smooth in the mouth, a texture that the creamy avocado and crunchy toasted walnuts helped compliment. It was so tasty I spent ten minutes looking through a thesaurus to try and describe it. Butternut Squash Agnolotti This was recommended by the sympathetic Kara and was really surprising! It was very sweet and smooth, with the mounted butter sauce coating the mouth but not the lips or, in my case, beard. The squash is sweet, but it all runs towards savory, like children fleeing a haunted house. The sage is crispy, joining hands with the crushed amarettos in a seance of savor and texture. Really fantastic and light! Fusilli My wife ordered this and found it exceedingly rich and robust. It was garlicky and savory, with a potent chicken flavor cut by bursts of savory pancetta (bacon’s sexy cousin). She found it satisfying that same warm place reserved for chicken noodle or matzo ball soup; the place for all warm chicken entrees that lives inside our hearts. Affogato At this point, entranced by the warm scenery and glow of the grill fire, we were pliable to the power of suggestion and ordered both of the desserts recommended by Kara. I got the affogato, which was made with rich and creamy espresso. The ice cream added a further level of diary unctuousness and sweetness, which offsets both the bitterness of coffee and that which exists in our day to day lives. Zeppole These were somewhere between the pièce de résistance and a coup de grâce. Crispy on the exterior and pillowy within, they were a little savory, almost like yellow cake. They came with chocolate and caramel sauce, both of with ran down my chin as I tried to drink them before we left.

Arriving at Annex Kitchen ten minutes before opening, we found parking to be a breeze, securing a spot right in front of the restaurant. The moment we stepped in, greeted by the empty ambiance and a warm smile from the server, it felt promising. However, our lack of reservation meant we were faced with a nearly three-hour wait due to full booking. Opting for the drink bar over the pizza bar, we settled into our seats. The staff were exceptionally friendly, enhancing the experience with their kindness. My old-fashioned and my wife's sweet drink hit all the right notes—flavorful without overwhelming strength. The truffle fries, served with aioli and Parmigiano, boasted perfect crispiness and a seasoning that left us impressed. Our main courses, the sliced hanger steak for me and the Mezze Rigatoni with sausage ragu for my wife, were memorable. My steak was cooked to medium perfection, a rarity in my dining experiences, while my wife found her pasta tasty, albeit the sausage flavor slightly dominant. The bartenders shared useful drink-making tips, adding value beyond just serving drinks. Their suggestion to book ahead is a wise one, considering the packed house. Yet, the bar offered its own charm and engaging experience. Peering over at the pizza bar, its allure was undeniable, hinting at another visit solely for their reputed pizzas. Our evening capped off with a delightful Crème Brûlée cocktail, a creative concoction blending Stoli Vanilla Vodka, Ampersand Madagascar vanilla ice cream, vanilla extract, egg white, and a caramelized sugar rim. It was an exquisite dessert drink that perfectly rounded off our dining experience. A reservation is key to fully experiencing what Annex Kitchen has to offer, though spontaneous visitors can still find joy and deliciousness at the bar.

Took my wife here to celebrate her birthday, our first time dining at The Annex Kitchen, very nice atmosphere and very busy location with outstanding food. Our meal consisted of, Steamed Mussels, Kale Salad, Butter Lettuce Salad, Squid Ink linguine, Broccolini, Tagliolini and Hanger Steak. Hats off to the Chefs for such an outstanding meal, our first server got us seated and explained everything very well since it was our first experience here, he then was pulled away and we were greeted by Gretchen who got us started with our appetizer followed by our order and drink request. We were having a great time when we noticed that once our food had come it was a very long delay for us to be checked on by Gretchen. We had completely finished our meals and table cleared before being asked about desert. I will say that it was very busy when we arrived but by the time we had finished it had slowed quite a bit. We will be back to see if the service issue was a fluke but it’s the difference between a 5 star and 4.

In the bustling gastronomic landscape of Fresno, Annex Kitchen emerges not merely as a restaurant but as a sanctum of culinary brilliance. This establishment transcends the mundane, offering a dining experience that is akin to a poetic exploration of flavors.

The Lasagna and Meatballs: A Fiery Dance of Aromas: The lasagna, a layered marvel, intertwines the richness of cheese with the robustness of perfectly seasoned meat, creating a dish that ignites the palate with its zestful harmony. Accompanying this are the meatballs, which are nothing short of a culinary epiphany. Each bite is a testament to the chef’s prowess in balancing spice and texture, crafting a dish that resonates with the soul. There is always a limited supply of the lasagna so make sure you let them know straight away so you can reserve your slice. So fire! Truffle Fries and Carrots: A Testament to Gastronomic Precision: The truffle fries are not merely a side dish; they are a revelation. Each fry is anointed with the perfect amount of truffle, resulting in a flavor that is both earthy and sublime. The carrots, often a humble ingredient, are transformed into a dish of exquisite delight, their natural sweetness accentuated by expert seasoning. Dessert Drinks: The Nectar of the Gods: In a world where dessert drinks are often an afterthought, Annex Kitchen elevates them to celestial heights. Each concoction is a masterful blend of flavors, textures, and aromas, offering an intoxicating finish to an already extraordinary meal. Ambience and Service: The Unsung Heroes: While the culinary offerings are undoubtedly the stars, the ambience and service at Annex Kitchen deserve their share of accolades. The environment is one of warmth and welcome, perfectly complementing the culinary artistry. The service is attentive yet unobtrusive, adding to the overall enchantment of the experience.

Annex Kitchen is not just a restaurant; it is a bastion of culinary art; a vibe. It stands as a testament to the power of food to not just satiate but to transport, to transform, to elevate. To dine here is to partake in a journey of flavors, meticulously crafted and lovingly served. For those seeking a culinary adventure in Fresno, Annex Kitchen is a destination that simply must not...
