When the drunken beast calls for meat and gastrogrease I seem to sniff out something dirty(in a good way) and bad for me. It's strange for a San Diego local to eat Mexican food outside of San Diego when I used to live in Orange county I would drive to San Diego just for it. The further from the border you get the worse the Mexican food. This is generally true outside of a few pockets in LA and OC(not anywhere near DTF). I was on the prowl for a burrito. Flour tortilla, carne asada, cheese. Optional items include French fries(a SD thing), guacamole, sour cream(crema fresco), and rice. Got drunk at Florentine's and I came here to bask in Mexican food and some Horchata to wash away my sins.
I didn't even bother asking for a California burrito, that explanation would have taken too long to educate people about the French fries and not potatoes. They did my Carne Asada right, large warm flour tortilla, no visible natural burns meant it could have used a few extra seconds on the flat top. The burrito itself was large, not enormous or unmanageable for a native, but large. Meat was a little tough, but flavorful, nicely sized and held by a correct amount and placement of cheese. Salsa fresco was all over 1 side which was ok, but I prefer hot sauce. 1 bite, 1 pour, you know the score. Mullethawk 1, Burrito 0. The Horchata was done well, not too thick, not overly spiced or too sweet, nice large size. As good as it was I just wasn't that hungry for food. I wanted more out of life, more out of the night and more out of DTF.
Small indoor seating, a few outdoor tables, 2 were just broken (concrete no less). I didn't even both to look for the bathroom, just too many rowdy, loud drunks drawing attention to themselves I slipped away into the darkness of a neighboring dumpster to unleash the 9 drinks I had throughout the night.
For Orange County it's a 4 star place, but not quite up to 4 stars in SD, but better than 3 also. A definite stop as I re-explore DTF, which has changed so much...
Read moreMolca Salsa is another one of those late night hole in the wall Mexican food that is likely open whenever you want to eat. My most common trips here happen after a night at Downtown Fullerton. There is a tiny indoor area where you order, as well as stone tables outside. You can order from one of 2 registers, but people usually don't seem to understand that. The worse part is that there are stools right where you order, so you might be ordering and passing money over someone's head. Most people tend to eat outside here anyway. On a side note, most people seem to leave their trash out too. Eww.
-=-CAF-=- So I get the carne asada fries here. They call them Super Fries. All the elements for a perfect CAF are right here, but there's just something about the quality of fries, meat, and guacamole that just doesn't work here. The carne asada meat seems like it could use more pepper when cooked. The guacamole is just tasteless. The fries are usually soggy and not at all crispy. There is better CAF out there but it's usually late and there's no complaints from me during a...
Read moreGlad to see this place is still open. I don't know how it is anymore but 17 years ago when I was in high school we used to turn the parking lot of this place into an after party. Literally 100's of people drinking and eating super fries in the parking lot from 12-3 a.m.They've never had the most premium Mexican food. It's fast food. It's greasy and probably not that fresh but it gets the job done when you're cooked and need a greasy burrito to balance you out. I'm 35 years old now. Grown up with kids of my own. Every once in a while I'll drive by this place and remember different simpler times. I'm glad this place is still standing considering a lot of businesses in this particular complex don't make it. At this point Molcasalsa is a local land mark for an entire generation of kids from Fullerton and La Habra. Cheers to you Molcasalsa salsa with your greasy ass...
