The Afternoon is a specialty, brunch and Lunch restaurant located at 231 NW 10th ave in Gainesville, Florida. You can get a taste of their delicious food from 9am to 3pm every day, except Wednesday because this day, they are closed. I visited on a Sunday noon. I was looking for a light brunch and a great atmosphere to prepare for a meeting. They offer a small menu of light plates prepared for brunch and lunch. Their selections are all comprised of a wide range of vegetables. Each dish presents vegetables in prevalence over animal products and proteins. Herbs are implemented throughout all dishes, and the menu promotes an interesting twist to common brunch items whether it be using different ingredients or cooking it a different way. Afternoon also offers a range of beverages from coffee and specialty teas to wine, mimosas and even Mexican coke. The cost of dishes range from six to eight dollars, making it an affordable yet special occasion brunch for even the tightest budget. Being the biggest seafood fan, I opted for the Aftenoon’s take on a lux bagel. I ordered the Snack Plate. Priced at $10, I enjoyed a generous amount of smoked salmon, a 7-minute egg cut in half, a perfectly toasted piece of focaccia bread, with a side of crème fraiche and pickled onions with capers and cilantro. The presentation was fantastic. Everything was well organized on my plate and gave me a sense of the order in which to eat everything. The smell of the freshly toasted bread was most distinct along with the fresh cilantro. The textures contrasted and balanced each other very well. This dish was simply delicious. All of the different flavors balanced each other very well. I have a big appetite and the portions were good enough to fill me up. I had never received such a generous amount of fish protein before. The fish tasted fresh and went well with everything on the fish. Even mixing it with the egg and eating it as a bite with the toast and crème, fraiche helped accentuate its taste. The egg yellow was creamy and delicious. I loved the use of cilantro in the pickled onion and caper mix. The freshness and dominant taste of the cilantro helped mask the sometimes unpleasant bitterness of the caper and pickling, leaving behind a slick taste of the pickling and mixing the taste of the onion and caper very well without it being overwhelming. To drink, I ordered a Matcha Tea Latte, which was very refreshing, light and delicious. It was not overly sweet, nor really bitter, which are usual concerns when ordering this beautiful energy charged green beverage at places like Starbucks. The service was very good. I ordered at the counter after examining the menu for a few minutes and taking a couple extra minutes to swoon over the simplistic and hipster-homey décor. We sat down at the only open spot as the place was filled with people. The food only took about 10 minutes to delight us with its pleasant looks and steamy features. The restaurant is very clean and the vibe of the place is very nice and welcoming. Everything is very Instagramable. The décor is very sweet, light wood, with some walls white and muted light blue-green walls for a pop of color. There are plants and cursive writing signs. There is outside sitting under pretty blue and white umbrellas. Even the restrooms are aesthetically pleasing, with palm leaf wallpaper and circular mirrors. They also have a backyard with beautiful graffittied walls that are good for a post meal photo. I want to go back soon to try some of the other dishes. I tried a bite of the Shakshuka my boyfriend ordered and it was delicious. I would definitely recommend this lovely spot for any students or Gainesville locals hoping for photo ops, a quality and well-priced meal, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to make their Sunday a...

This restaurant should be called Serendipity, yet I do like the name of this place "Afternoon". I been traveling for work the last 2 months working night shifts. Lots of driving, lots of meals on the go. Haven't had much time to explore this ol college town. Yet from time to time I would venture out to partake in some local eat-ins. Finding this little gem today, tucked in a very quiet neighborhood along a back roadway was probably one of the best discoveries in a long time. This neutral-colored, tiny restaurant was so inconspicuously tucked away, that I almost drove past the building. As I pulled up to the back of the building to park, I was met with amazing beautiful and vibrant murals of wall art blazened along a stretch of barren walls. Most likely this was a public space dedicated for commissioned local artists. Everything about this restaurant tells me that the owners really care about delivering something wholesome and good to their community. LOVED the ambiance of this place when I first stepped inside, humble and unpretentious, which could mean their food will be the biggest showcase of them all without boasting.
Imagine waking up on a Sunday morning, after a rough night, and walking into an open floor planned kitchen of a friend or family's home. You are greeted with a warm smile at a long island countertop as they offer you fresh hot coffee and ask what you would like for breakfast or lunch, instead of "are you ready to order"?
The restaurant had this beautiful wood communal style dining table at the center of the restaurant along with smaller two and four top tables. It was honestly a comforting feeling almost like going back home to meet your loved ones for breakfast. It had this welcome home feeling. Considering I will have a long drive back home after this breakfast.
After a long night of caring for some of the sickest patients around, which can be incredibly taxing at times, mentally and physically. This was the right pick-me-up as I found solace in the atmosphere of this place. I was met with such a warm, good morning greeting. I did not know what to order, quite honestly, this being my first encounter with Afternoon. I mentioned I loved poaches eggs and hollandaise sauce and was recommended their popular dish 'Poached Eggs'. It was so delicious even down to the last morsel. Who would have thought poached eggs with this amazing brown butter hollandaise sauce , would pair so well with the tender roasted caramelized squash, garnished with minced walnuts and perfectly fried sage leaves all on a bed of soft crumbly cornbread. Please give this place a try you will not disappoint. Thank you to the staff, chefs and creaters of Afternoon restaurant for making my first time here a pleasant and memorable experience. You definitely have a...
Read moreWhile late-stage capitalism requires us to ask many tough questions, my dining experience at Afternoon forced one of those questions to the fore: “Should we, as a society, #cancel brunch?”
For a party of 3, the $80 price tag of this attempt at mid-morning mirth left us with more answers than questions. Indeed, you can ruin avocado toast by adding ingredients that were not only completely unnecessary but also uncalled for and arguably identifiable — a base layer of stinky cheese supported some overripe avocados that were topped with a slug-like potential tomato, a whispy translucent citrus, and (brace yourself)… corn. The taste of avocado was long gone from this toast. Beyond the massacre of this brunch staple (which cost willing millennials $16 per serving before tax), we had a roasted potato dish that did not come with the ordered egg + bacon additions, but instead whole cloves of moist garlic and more of the mystery citrus. The proximity of this location to UF’s well-regarded schools of agriculture and experimental botany labs began to raise questions.
While the food itself is one aspect of Afternoon, another is the wholly unimaginative brunch experience. A feeble attempt to compensate for the poor attitude and slow service of surly crew members by marking the bathrooms with “WC” written in cursive letters? Mounting wooden shelves of ‘organic’ ‘locally sourced’ frisante (wine) behind the counter? Please don’t insult us like that.
In closing, despite the fact that we forked over enough cash to never have even a sliver of hope of home-ownership or retirement, we came away hungry and seeking last night’s cold pizza to quell our hunger for the...
