SUMMARY: It's a straightforward, no-frills-no-fuss biscuit shop that sells biscuits, eggs, sausage, bacon, and coffee with a Southern homemade feel at a price that you'd be happy to pay every morning for. [Important Note: No card readers, CASH ONLY.] I originally gave them 4-stars, but their extra hospitality had earned them an extra star.
THE PRICES: are unbeatable as they haven't seemed to have changed since the shop's opening roughly 30 years ago. (The original owner-and-cook still works lovingly at the stove in the back.) The reasons the prices stay so low are: 1) They don't want to fuss with changing them, 2) They don't want to hear the customers fuss about prices, and 3) They simply don't fuss with fancy/expensive card readers. So be sure to BRING CASH.
THE MENU: is taped to the wall and is almost entirely à la carte; just list off what breakfast foods that you're in the mood for and you'll get a low price that you won't complain about. (The "combo meals" that they DO have are simply titled as the list of food that's in them. So you're listing your food either way.)
THE FOOD: is "just the way mom makes it." With the exception of the sausage patties, those turn out even BETTER than mom's. They hand-press the fresh/never-frozen (straight-from-the-grocery-cooler-that-morning) sausage meat into patties the size of a thick burger; none of those "flash frozen, silver dollar sized, machine-punched" patties there. It is not "gourmet" food, but that's never what they're aiming for: it's "homemade" food, which in many occasions turns out just what the soul needed.
THE SERVICE: is warm and casual. You can expect your food in 5 minutes from placing your order, 10 minutes if it's busy. If you forget to bring cash (like I did) they'll tell you to just pay for it the next time you come in. (They earned an extra star from me for their hospitality.)
THE SHOP: is a small humble thing attached to the side of a neighborhood gas station across the street from an abandoned strip mall tucked in an aged, unassuming part of town. The walls are lovingly adorned with crayon-scribbled coloring pages, tin signs randomly collected over the years, and framed clip-art circa Microsoft Word 97. The inside primarily features the take-out counter, but they have arranged a hodgepodge of mismatched tables and chairs across the front for those who insist on dining in. It's not a place for a first date (or the first dozen of dates actually), but it works well for those future days where you both want to stay in your pajamas and play Bananagrams over coffee and biscuits near a...
Read moreI usually do the sausage egg and cheese biscuit and I can say 10 out of 10 times the consistency of deliciousness has been the same… It makes me think it’s one of the last breakfast spots where Mamma is back there literally mixing dough herself.
I did this review on the spicy chicken biscuit, realizing I never jumped outside of my usual daily go to.
I guess I was expecting bag chicken from Tyson, but it wasn’t. It’s actually a great filet that hangs out of the biscuit about a half inch with a seasoning that steps closer to ‘Nashville hot’ than it is a ‘buffalo/cayenne’ which give an extremely unique twang/flavor.
The biscuits are perfectly cooked—fluffy, golden, and made fresh to order, so everything comes out piping hot. At around $5 each, they’re a steal for the quality and love put into them. The staff here are the real stars—super nice, homely, and personable. The guy at the register had me cracking up with his humor while taking my order, and you can feel the warmth from the whole team. The lady in the kitchen, affectionately called Mama, is clearly the heart of the place—she holds it all together with her magic touch.
Plus, it’s conveniently located right beside a Valero gas station, making it an easy stop for a quick, delicious bite. If you’re looking for amazing, affordable biscuits and a welcoming vibe, this spot is...
Read moreThe Biscuit Shopppe in Gainesville has been around since 1980, and it shows. I’ve had a hard time finding a good southern breakfast that’s different from all the rest, but this spot stands out. Next to a Valero gas station, it proves the saying true: “the best food spots are always next to a gas station.”
I got a chicken, egg, and cheese biscuit, which is my go-to, and it was spot on. The chicken had real flavor, and the biscuit was soft inside with a crispy, buttery top. Honestly, I could’ve eaten the biscuit by itself and been happy! The hashbrown was cooked just right and not a greasy mess.
Most people grab their food to go, but there are two small tables if you want to eat there. I washed mine down with an orange juice from their Coca-Cola cooler. The lady at the counter was really nice and welcoming.
With all these new chain places opening up, it’s been frustrating to see small local spots not getting the love they deserve. These places make our community what it is. If you’re in Gainesville, take a break and enjoy a solid meal at The Biscuit Shopppe. You...
