This place was formerly "Lumpia Pancit" because I would see it going down south on 270 and when I saw it changed to Mathew's Grill, my husband and I decided to check it out.
This little restaurant is located in the Festival Shopping Center, nestled between Sun & Ski and the Lotte Plaza Market. We got to the place around 12:30pm on a Saturday, so it wasn't crowded.
As soon as we walked in, they showed us to our table. Then they asked if we were going to do the sit down buffet (which is $18/pp), but because I wasn't sure what they were serving one of the servers said we could check out the food on the buffet line before making a decision. You also have the option to order a la carte.
Today in the buffet they had: Lomi, Salmon Sinigang, Chicharon, Lumpiang Shanghai, Pork Tocino, Chicken Longanisa, Pancit Malabon, Diniguan, Kare-Kare. Being a Filipino American, I recognize pretty much everything in the menu so we opted for the buffet. It was a very good thing we came in with empty bellies because we stuffed our faces with lots of yummy food. For the drinks, I got the calamansi juice. I didn't know they were serving this drink since I checked the menu online before coming.
There is a dessert at the end of the buffet line, but we ordered the Halo Halo a la carte. We got it to go since I was already so full I knew I wouldn't be able to finish the whole thing.
In the back, there are individual restrooms for men and women. I don't recall there being a changing table in the women's restroom.
This was definitely a great find for us because I personally haven't been to any Filipino restaurants in the DMV area other than 3 cafeteria-grocery store hybrids in Northern Virginia. We highly recommend this place and we will also be bringing our families next time.
Side-note: it's pretty cold inside so I'd recommend wearing a sweater or something.
Shout-out to Ian for taking...
Read moreHello friends, it's Bubba "Big BM" Mack reporting from Matthew's Grill in picturesque Gaithersburg, MD. The fare is Filipino/Asian fusion. It was spectacular!! This establishment earned its five star rating with service, atmosphere, food and a great BM. Today, I'm with Wang Dong, noted BM expert and acclaimed author of "Asian Cuisine and the BM Aftermath," the tour de force of Asian BM study. Wang Dong has published numerous works on BMs and is also an expert on intestinal gas. His paper "The Massive Gassive" is another oft quoted work. We approached the buffet at Matthew's from the perspective of BM kit assembly. For those not in the know, a BM kit is what is required consumption to produce a righteous BM later. Wang Dong went down the buffet, pointing out the meats and vegetables that would be forged into the BM to follow. He noted, as we all should, that vegetables prepared in the Asian way have more appeal than something from a Green Giant box in the frozen food section of the local grocer's. Consequently, most Westerners consume more vegetables at an Asian buffet than they would ordinarily, resulting in a much more satisfying BM down the road. The problem is they will not link the added vegetables they consume at an Asian buffet with the superior BM hours later. Wang suggests putting "BM Friendly" signs on those foods likely to produce a better BM. He also suggested that a sign identifying gaseous foods be displayed so that a patron could select for themselves just how much gas they wanted to produce for the perfect the evacuation. Wang Dong added that desserts, in moderation, have little to no effect on the future BM. Like most students and experts of all things BM, Wang Dong said that balance is the key. I hope this review will prove helpful and give the reader a better BM experience. This is Bubba "Big BM" Mack wishing you good travels...
Read moreI had lunch with my family at your restaurant on March 1. It was to celebrate a special occasion. We were very, very disappointed with the quality of the food. Moreover, presentation was beyond Bad! Our food were served in to go containers. Just imagine pork sinigang served in a plastic greasy container with plastic utensils - yikes! It was impossible to enjoy it! This is just an example but I could go on and on and fill up this entire page with my grievances. No excuse for serving food in to go containers! And don’t even mention That this was due to covid! Eating food from plastic and styrofoam are far more unsanitary to me! With that said, My family and I will not go back there again! Sorry MG, but you just lost one of your good customers! B. Concepcion
It was a Sunday, February 27. We had a despidida lunch for our sister who left for Manila on March 4.
Additionally, Your host did not give us a discount for paying our bill in cash - $300+! He said he already accounted the discount but we did not think so as he didn’t know we were going to pay our bill in cash until after he gave us our tab. Our family has been patrons if your restaurant for years! Just unhappy with our experience. We thought you should know this. Thanks for the opportunity to write this...
