Made a mistake of celebrating the 95th Birthday of a very special person at el Seǹor Pollo in Westminster Ave., Garden Grove, CA 92843. I had eaten at the place before, and I found the Chef (is he really a full fledged chef?) to be personable, and the couple of dishes I tried were really nice (ceviche mixto-mixed ceviche, and Chupe de Camarones-Shrimp Soup). Debating where to go, I thought of this place, and I really thought I was making the right decision. We had 8 people in our party, most of them had never tried this place, but I assured everyone that it was going to be a great culinary event. Dishes: Ceviche Mixto (fish and seafood marinated in limes, etc.), was not bad, servings were average. 4 Stars. Chupe de Camarones (shrimp soup), a very traditional peruvian dish that is supposed to have large side shrimp, egg, fish, etc, kind of like in soup form. Did not get to eat it because they forgot my order, but those that ate it did like it. 4 Stars. Papa a la Huancaina (potatos in a yello sauce, with lettuce, egg, and black olive), the sauce was smooth, the potatos overcooked, not bad. 3.5 Stars. The B-Day person had a Chicken Soup, which was so badly presented that it was not finished, nor taken home. The chicken in very large pieces, dry and hard, a disaster compared to the fine traditional peruvian chicken soup. 1.5 Stars. I Whole Chicken cut in 8 pieces. Came with fries and a tasty salad. Did like the chicken this time, it was moist and properly marinated. 3.5 Stars. 2 Chicha Moradas, 2 jars of peruvian purple corn, boiled, cooled down, refreshing when done right. 3.5 Stars. Bread was late arriving, one small basket with not enough bread for everyone. Noticed the other table, probably better friends of theirs, got 2. 1.5 Stars. Generally speaking service was terrible. We felt taken, and regretted having spent such an important event in a place that did not perform. 2 Stars. Finally, after an hour of back and forth, they managed to bring some kind of fish dish for the Birthday person. Did not even finish it, a complete disaster that in the end, made me realize that I had chosen the wrong place. Final Bill, around $200, plus gratuity. No Coffee, no Tea, no Water, they make you feel like you are a second class client, which we are not, never been. Chef Carlos walked to another table, but did not have the decency to be nice with us. This is our last official visit to this place. I figure if you are so busy that you can not handle your clientele well, what's the use? They lost our respect and admiration. At the end of the day, they are exactly what they appeared to be: a small, inefficient place that sells peruvian food. Maybe it was that they were busy, but that is not an excuse, for we drove long and far to get...
Read moreI don't know if the other reviewers are used to this kind of service or if the lady treats some people better than others. I do not know. But it is not the first time this lady (I believe is the owners wife, not sure) has a bad attitude towards me and my family. This time I came for lunch by myself and saw they had a lunch special. When I got my order and inquired about the small salad shown on the picture, she responded rudely "no, no, it doesn't come with it. No". If it doesn't come with it DON'T PUT IT ON THE PICTURE. I'm peruvian, food is ok, but I expect to be treated nicely. Oh, and sorry for moving your little table sign to show you what I wanted. It was very rude of you to just point at the table with your grumpy face to let me know you wanted me to put it back. I was going to do it anyway. 2 starts only because of the owner. My parents come here often and they know him. He is an amicable person.
Read moreI don’t recommend this place, unless you don’t have high expectations or not privy to authentic Peruvian cuisine. I happen to be a native Peruvian who just happen to be visiting here at Garden Grove for business. I was driving on Westminster Avenue and I saw this restaurant and decided to try it out. It was a late lunch. I ordered the Tallarin Saltado con Pollo. upon arrival, the restaurant was empty and the cashier seemed a little disturbed by the fact that she was focused on a TV show in the lobby. I candidly requested to make sure that the dish is spicy and she said it would be but it turned out to be pretty bland. I would say that the noodles were very soupy. Unlike in traditional Peruvian cuisine, this dish is supposed to be a sautéed dish. The taste was very bland and basic. Anybody could’ve done this. Basic just boil doodles with diced chicken breast and raw undercooked onions and tomatoes. No flavor at all. Inside the box comes a dinner roll, which in my opinion it should’ve been bagged separately with at least a piece of butter. The bill was over 15 dollars. I find that pretty expensive for what they served. If you if it was somewhere like $7.99 or even $8.99 maybe I would give it three stars. I don’t recommend this place....
