Sugarlicious Bakery — Restaurant in Gastonia

Had trouble finding a bakery to make a pretty simple bday cake for my husband. The corona issue has many places closed ☹️. I kept looking on internet for one, and found Sugarlicious. I called on a Friday needing the cake for Monday. Just a simple 3 layer white cake, cream cheese frosting with strawberries between layers and garnish on top. I was told no problem, $35 and will be ready between 4-6 the next day. This was a surprise for husband. I usually make one myself every year but thought that a BAKERY cake would surely be way better. I mean, they are a professional, right? Well, i had lots to do on pick up day. I planned my errands and went to get the cake after 4. I drove from York SC. My son and I arrived at 4:20. It was busy with 3 customers. I finally told the young man my name and I was picking up a cake. He went to get it and came back saying it would be about 15 more mins. Ok I thought. I can wait. We sat and stared at the cupcakes, cookies and all. And i was looking at the pricing board. I saw cookies $2.00. Well it was longer than 15 mins so I ended up buying a cherry lemon cupcake and some cookies. BTW, the owner was announcing buy 5 cookies get one free. A girl ahead if me bought some. They were in the display case. Cute shaped iced cookies. She did the buy 5 deal. I thought they were the board price $2 each. They WERE the only cookies in the display case! I followed suit! The young man put them in a styrofoam box. I opened and let my son get one. THEN the young man tells me the price! $4 each! He said the chocolate chip ones were $2. They weren't in the display. They were sitting on a stand off to the side. I was embarrassed so I paid the ridiculous price! We were STILL waiting on my cake!!! The owner apologized and said they thought I’d be closer to 6 for pick up. THEY told me between 4-6. We got tired of waiting and told her we’d ride around for little while. It was 4:45 when I left. I got back at 5:15, went in and owner met me saying she’d bring it to my car. I thought she meant right then. Ok, I went to my car and WAITED, and WAITED. It was nearly 5:40! Needless to say I was aggravated!! I went back in. Owner was flying around telling people how busy they’d been. Young man finally waited on me and I’m sure he could see the look on my face! He went back and came out saying they were boxing it. WOW..15 mins turned into nearly 2 hours!!! So, time to eat...OMG! Disappointment doesn’t even describe it! Tonight I read several reviews matching my problem. WAY too much icing. You can’t even taste the cake for the frosting overwhelming you. The frosting was not cream cheese like she told me. It was reg buttercream. The cake had no flavor. Not at all what I expected from a bakery. She also told me there would be strawberry filling between layers. Not sure what happened but when I cut the cake there was many places with no filling. Then there were blobs of it. Lots of icing though, like 2 inches worth to fill gaps. The ONLY thing they did right was strawberry garnish on top. Oh, they felt so bad about my long wait, the young man said owner told him to give me. $25 gift certificate! NOW I know why..they royally screwed up my cake AND made me wait 2 hrs for it! Oh and the certificate, it’s for there of course. Ha! Anybody want it!? I...

I usually use a different bakery but since the virus outbreak I had to choose another place. Iv used this place once before along while ago at the old location when it was owned by a different person but the cakes are way to sweet and the particular staff I dealt with weren’t to friendly but I was out of options and this place is under new ownership as it seems so I called this bakery to see if I could send a picture of the cake I wanted and get a price. The girl I spoke to gave me a number for Kelly so I texted the phone number and told her my name and that I needed a cake and wanted a price on it. A little while later kelly texts back and says

“ Hello Brandon, this would require a printer for cakes and I do not have one, I apologize! Thank you for thinking of us!“.

I will post a photo of the cake and the text msg if needed but the cake did not require a printer this was hand carved but if she wanted to use a printer for the cake and did not have one to use then that’s totally fine I was not upset about that part but the message wasn’t professional in my opinion. She could have called me or text me back to discuss other options or if I wanted a different type of cake but she didn’t do that to me it was just like “well we don’t have a printer for your cake goodbye” what happen to places earning your business ?? and even though she used nice word like I apologize and thank you for thinking of us that don’t make up for the lack of customer service or trying to earn my business in another way. I called another bakery and the lady told me they don’t do cakes like that but she would love for me to look at her Facebook page and they would love to make a cake for me even if it wasn’t that one. The owner, Kelly, sat down with me and discussed the cake I wanted for a small baby shower. We agreed upon a 9 inch round cake. I sent a picture of the cake to her as well. The cake I received was nothing like I ordered. It was HUGE! I needed to feed 10-15 people and this cake would have fed 100-150 people. It was square, not round. But the thing that embarrassed me was the quality of the product. The cake itself was over cooked. It looked as if it had fallen while cooking. As a result, I believe there was an attempt to make the cake look presentable by using icing to build it up. As a result, there was a disgusting amount of icing on this cake. I’m talking 2 inches thick. The icing tasted good. The cake itself was not good. The excessive icing only made the finished product taste worse!! I was extremely embarrassed to have served this cake!! I am not one to post negative reviews. I called the shop and asked to speak to the owner to discuss my experience. Maybe a new person made this cake? Maybe there was a miscommunication? I was willing to discuss. However, Kelly never returned my call. Very unprofessional n not acceptable.
