I’ve been here 3 times since they’ve opened. I wanted to give them a fair chance before reviewing them. Also, let me say…a business who only chooses to acknowledge the good reviews? Not a good look and not a good look for a business in Geneseo.
Pros? The atmosphere is really cool, the bar is awesome. The Fideo soup is really really good. Very authentic.
Let my preface by saying, my Dad and his entire family is from the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. So I grew up with homemade Hispanic food.
The first time I went to Habaneros, I complained about the rice and beans being very bland. The rice was the worst, it was like buttered white rice. The server told me they serve authentic Mexican cuisine. And I told him your beans have no flavor and neither does the rice. The second time I went I had a sope and Fideo soup. The soup was awesome but the sope had no flavor. Then just this week I went again. Had Fideo soup and a cheese enchilada. The enchilada was basically a brick of cheese, it was so gross. My mom complained about her tortilla soup because it was super salty and the server ignored her. The food lacks flavor here and in Mexican culture, flavor is everything.
Also, the restaurant needs to work on their timing. Last time I was there everyone’s food came out separately. My husband was halfway through his meal before my soup came out. Makes a great dining experience.
Hope things get better here because right now, I wouldn’t recommend this spot to anyone. I’d direct them down the road to...
Read moreLI wanted to be fair and give this place another shot after our first experience, which was nothing short of horrible. On our first visit after they opened, the cheese enchiladas were cold and unmelted, the tacos were overwhelmingly salty, and overall, the food was just bad. We figured they might have been working out the kinks, so we waited about a month and gave them a second chance.
Unfortunately, it was just as disappointing—if not worse. We left hungry because the food was so bad! The beans and rice were completely flavorless (not to mention they forgot to bring them out at first), the tacos were again way too salty, and the chicken enchiladas I ordered instead of cheese (which are my favorite at Habanero’s in the QC) were bland, with barely any cheese.
To top it off, they served the enchiladas without lettuce and tomatoes, so I had to ask for them—just like I had to ask for the missing rice and beans. The service was slow, and the staff wasn’t very friendly. It’s a far cry from what made Habanero’s a QC staple.
Sadly, we ended up taking the food home just to give it to our dogs. I really hope they improve because, at this rate, I don’t think they’ll last long. If you’re looking for good Mexican food, I’d suggest going down the road. And that’s saying something, considering we didn’t even like that place when we first moved here!
Do better, Habanero’s—you have the recipe,...
Read moreWent here as we had been wanting to try it. It was new so hiccups were expected. We sat for 30 mins before anyone ever even asked what we wanted to drink, when we did finally get our drinks, 45 mins after we sat down we ordered and waited. As for service, we were never asked if we would like our drinks refilled and getting help was next to impossible, when we were helped the wait staff was pleasant. For the price I will say the portions are good. However the rice is bland, the fries they have are bland and lacking even basic seasoning. The steak fries appetizer is absolutely not worth the price, the cheese solidified to the plate almost instantly making it impossible for my son to eat. The main dish my partner ordered should have came with tortillas and did not. I will say the atmosphere was nice, decor was pleasant and over all the interior...
