So, this is going to be a mixed reviews and I give it with mixed feelings. I want to like this place. I really really do, and some things are easy to like. Others, are simply impossible to overlook.
I had a wonderful breakfast of Eggs Benedict, while my wife was thoroughly disappointed with her eggs and sausage. Her scrambled eggs were dry and gave the impression that they sat under a heat lamp for a long time. The dinner rolls are good quality bread and I'm glad to see them home made, but the cinnamon roll is just a large dinner rolls with cinnamon and glaze on it.
The lady who served us was incredibly nice and very proud of her teas. She told us that she intends to swap out the tea bags that they currently buy for loose leaf tea of higher quality. But for all her aspirations to make this place in to a high end tea parlor, she made some serious mistakes with her teas. My wife and I ordered different teas which were both good. A Jasmine green tea which was a little too floral but made us happy anyway, and an Earl Grey tea which was very adequate.
But when we asked how long to let the tea finish brewing, she didn't know why that was important. She just told us to leave it in as long as we want depending on how strong we like it.
People at other tables went 20 minutes or more and never took their tea bags out.
A good tea parlor gives a timer with their tea or at the VERY least tells you how many minutes to steep your tea and let's you time it on your own.
Nobody gives tea bags in hot water and tells you to just leave it in until it's bitter and over brewed.
If we hadn't known to remove the tea bags on our own, they would have continued to steep and ruined our experience.
For the record, a good rule for Jasmine green tea is 2 to 4 minutes although it will change every 30 seconds so it's worth experimenting with. Earl Grey is 3 to 5 minutes.
Also, don't expect to be offered any condiments such as honey, lemon, or milk with your tea.
My high expectations for this place have been replaced with high hopes. I wait with baited breathh to see if, over time, they morph from what they are today in to what it seems they...
Read moreQuaint and oh so adorable!! We were in Glendale and I looked up "restaurants near me", so glad The Spicery popped up! My friend and I had never been there. We got there just after it opened. The hostess asked us if we had a reservation, and we said no, but they were able to seat us right away. We had a sweet waitress name Megan she was dressed up like what looked like a French maid. She was so nice and knowledgeable. She told us about the ice and hot teas, and the specials of the day. We tried two specialty Iced Teas. Then we ordered the quiche of the day specials. I had a vegetable Feta quiche and my friend had a chicken taco quiche. We both loved our entrees they each came with salads and the most delicious rolls! We told ourselves we weren't going to finish the rolls because we wanted to try their desserts. They brought out an amazing looking dessert tray and told us there were only two banana cream pie slices left. So, we ended up ordering a pineapple cake and a slice of banana cream pie. We split them and they were absolutely heavenly. The hostess came around and told us about upcoming specials and events at The Spicery. There are Mother's Day and Easter events. We cannot wait to tell our friends about this place and come back as a group! As we were leaving we noticed every table was filled, it was a packed house! We went out to our car and the street was full of cars too... we came at the right time! Next time we will make a reservation. We...
Read moreI recently went to the Mother's Day Afternoon Tea on May 7, 2016. I was surprisingly disappointed. This was my 3rd time coming to The Spicery. The first time I went was for a Breast Cancer Benefit that the restaurant was hosting and was so impressed with this restaurant that I couldn't wait to go back. So the second time my husband and I took his mom for Christmas and again the food was amazing and we all enjoyed our time there. Needless to say when I went this past weekend for Afternoon Tea I was disappointed. I agree with Jessica G who posted a review on 1/23/16. The food that was served was not what I expected. When looking at the menu I thought bite size meant they would be like finger sandwiches. I felt that after leaving there and paying $60.00(including tip) for two people I would not be looking to eat an hour later. I guess the bite size sandwich portions wouldn't have been so bad if they would have come with one of the sides that they normally offer with a sandwich. I also think that since they charged $2.00 more than they usually charge (I guess since it was Mother's Day) that we would have received the small parfait of fruit and custard with the rest of the bite size desserts that is usually served.
Now don't get me wrong even though everything was small all the tiny bite size foods had great flavor. I guess that is why it was disappointing because it was like a tease....I...
