I haven't had the best experiences with this restaurant before, however a friend wanted to try it so I decided to give them another chance. First things first, The food is very good quality, however if you have any food restrictions, I would not recommend this restaurant.
I'll preface this by saying, I have something called functional dyspepsia, which prevents me from being able to digest certain sugars. I have a more severe case which prevents me from eating 4 out of 8 kinds of sugars. Making my diet extremely restricted. I can handle a little bit bit of stomach pain from cross contamimation, but actually eating the items causes severe pain, puking, bathroom issues, and internal bleeding. I try not to make too big of a deal of it, however i also have to look out for my own health. certain foods are worse than others, such as garlic, onion, wheat, cellery and high fructose being the worst.
Ive had issues in the past with them messing up my orders and still charging us for it, however I had hoped that things would go a bit better this time, as it has been two years since my last visit, I was sorely dissopointed. Things started off well and good, however the second I asked if the sweet tea was made with natural sugar((because im allergic to high fructose, and simply wanted to know if the beverage would be safe for me to consume)) the waitresses attitude instantly changed, acting annoyed and exasperated by my question. When we were ready to order our food, I noticed she caught an attitude again when my friend asked her to leave something out that she couldn't handle. I ordered next, two sushi rolls, 22$ each, and asked that they please leave out the Avocado, asparagus, and kimchi sauce((because I wasn't sure if it had garlic or onion in it, and after the attitude she had with me asking about sugar I didn't want to bother bringing it up)) she said "okay" to each thing, and i felt excited and hoped this would be a better experience from the last time.
However when our food arrived, and the waitress dropped off my sushi and quickly skirted off to her next customer, i went to eat the sushi when we realized there was avacado in /BOTh/ rolls. We tried to push the avacado out, hoping to make it semi edible, however the avacado was too soft and simply spread around, further contaminating the roll. I felt bad letting them know there was an issue with the rolls, so we waited until the waistress came back to our table to let her know the order was inncorrect, and we appologized and explained i wasnt able to have the avocado, and she gave an exhasperated sigh and gave us an attitude while saying she would drop this food off and let her manager know. I was taken aback by the attitude, as someone whos worked in the customer service industry for 8 years.. i could never imagine acting that way towards a customer, however i tried to let it slide and waited for the managers appearance.
When he showed up after several minutes of waiting, he informed us we would still be charged for the sushi because it was "already made", and asked if we would like to order something else in addition. I, now very emotional about not only the rude treatment from the waitress, but now realizing we had to pay for both expensive rolls,on top of risking them messing up again and we simply cant afford that right now.
I was nearly in tears at this point, and had to quickly excuse myself to the bathroom so i wouldnt have to go through the embaresment of being seen crying over food. I know it might sound stupid, but ive had to deal with this treatment contantly ever since i was diagnosed 4 years ago, either being seen as a "picky dramaqueen" or having to put up with whatever pain and sickness that came with forcing myself to eat it, the cost of buying something new, or, as in this case, having to go hungry so i wouldnt have to risk paying for something ELSE i couldnt eat.
By the time i had finished crying, and returned humiliated, my husband let me know that he had talked to the manager, and we had a /small/ discount on our bill. Never...
Read moreI’ve been to this restaurant 3 times now, and have had 3 distinctly different experiences.
The Good - The first time was outstanding. We each had one of the Chef’s Specials, and all were amazing. Despite being very busy, they were fast, efficient & the food was delicious.
The “OK” - My 2nd visit was for sushi. I moved to Gloucester a couple years ago from VA Beach, where great sushi restaurants abound, so my expectations are a bit high. I found the sushi average at best, and a bit overpriced, but at least the service was good. L The Ugly - My 3rd visit was about as bad as it gets. We waited a long time to for a waiter, and after about 15 minutes the manager (maybe owner?) came & took our order. He was nice enough, and we didn’t mind too much waiting since we were going to enjoy the entrees from our first visit. But things went downhill from there. The appetizer was a shrimp dish that was supposed to be fried with a pastry type coating. I took a big bite, swallowed, and looked at the other half still in my hand & the shrimp was completely, totally RAW. I called the waiter/manager/owner over & he admitted it was truly raw. Now in better restaurants I’ve dined in (and worked in when I was much younger) something like this warranted a comped meal, if not the entire check - but despite the fact that I would likely (and did indeed) end up in - let’s call it “digestive distress” soon after, all that was offered was to take the appetizer off the bill. Then the entrees came, and we were still hoping that at least those might salvage some of the evening. But no, all 3 entrees were cold. By that point I was past the point of caring, so we ate & got out so I could get home (to the raw shrimp induced evening in the bathroom).
So I don’t know what happened from our first awesome visit to our last nightmare ...understaffed? New Owners? Who knows? But it was bad enough that I doubt I’ll try it again - which is a shame, since there aren’t that many options in our rural...
