I ordered the Spinach and Crab-stuffed Haddock with garlic mashed potatoes and green beans. The haddock was badly overcooked and I couldn’t see or taste any crab in the stuffing, which was supposed to be topped with a savory newburg sauce but consisted mainly of soggy bread crumbs mixed with spinach. Worse yet, the stuffing had an overpowering flavor of an herb or spice I couldn’t identify and didn’t like. The garlic mashed potatoes were too salty and the green beans were overcooked to the point of being soft in texture and olive green in color.
My husband ordered Shrimp Milano, a pasta dish with jumbo shrimp, artichokes, sun-dried tomatoes, capers, and a garlic and butter white wine sauce. It was better than my haddock but the penne was a bit overcooked, we couldn’t taste even a hint of wine in the sauce, and the dish was so bland overall that we requested lemon wedges and Parmesan cheese to sprinkle over the top.
On a positive note, our waitress provided us with very good service. But the food was such a disappointment - and much too expensive for the poor to mediocre quality - that we will not be returning to J’s Corner...
Read moreFrom the outside, this place looks like a chintzy little ordinary roadside diner. Do NOT let that fool you!
The only reason we stopped here on the way back from Mt. Washington was that "Buffalo Mac N Cheese" was on their big sign. We went in not expecting much. But EVERY dish that we ordered was absolutely fantastic, and also unique. There were 5 of us and we all raved about the food. We could not believe how good everything was! And the atmosphere was that of a fancier restaurant. They really need to get a new sign and touch up the outside so it matches the high quality of this restaurant and draws in more customers.
Something else we weren't expecting was that they were very careful with social distancing (this being 2020). The tables were far apart and there was a sanitizer table by the front door, and the servers had masks on. I think there was also a sign saying masks were required unless seated.
Overall it was a truly memorable experience and our only complaint is that it is not closer to where we live so we could come here...
Read moreMy sister and I had lunch at J's on a very busy Saturday afternoon after skiing. The restaurant was clean, spacious, and bright. The hostess was welcoming, as was our waitress, Gretchen. She provided excellent 👏 service! Everything sounded so good, but Gretchen had me at garlic mashed potatoes. We both chose the Baked Stuffed Haddock. My sister had it with Newburg sauce, while I had mine plain. We also had the wonderful house salad with mixed greens and vegetables. This was a dinner-plate salad that was fresh and fabulous. All servings were large. I took home half of everything and enjoyed it for lunch the next day. The fish was fresh, the spinach stuffing tasty, and the garlic mashed potatoes addictive, and all served piping hot. Gretchen was attentive at the best level and always with a smile. The only downsides were the noisy environment and the just so-so coffee. We will definitely come again when in the area! Based on the smiles on the other patrons' faces, I suspect they will as well. Thanks, Gretchen, for...
