Abigail's Tap Room — Restaurant in Grafton

For such a cute building and initial atmosphere, I was surprised by the lack of hospitality and overall hostility we encountered.

We were not met with a host but instead a man clearing tables, gruffly asking how many people we had without even saying hello or making eye contact. He told us we could sit where we wanted and that someone would be with us shortly.

It was relatively busy, so when we waited about 10 minutes for someone to get us menus, we were not surprised or upset. We got our menus, and when we were ready to order, I asked if I could do grits instead of potatoes. The waitress looked exasperated, saying, "We don't usually do that, but I'll ask." I said, “That's totally fine.” Then she asked, "Toast or biscuits?" So I asked, "Could I do an English muffin?” She scoffed, rolled her eyes, and tersely responded, "TOAST or BISCUIT." It took me by surprise, so I apologized, put in an order for a biscuit, and turned away from her.

I assume she realized that her attitude was offensive and off-putting, so she then told us that they “don’t do substitutions.” This information is not listed anywhere on their menu, tables, or entrance, nor was it communicated outside of the waitress being belittling to the customer.

We considered leaving because of how the waitress made us uncomfortable. However, we hoped that the food would still be good; we were sorely mistaken. One of us ordered an omelette, and the rest of us ordered the country breakfasts.

The potatoes were not red skin like the menu said but clearly the cubed and frozen ones from the grocery store, so overcooked and dry that we could not get a fork through them, and there were no seasonings to be found. We ordered different types of eggs; the scrambled were done okay, but the over-easy were actually over-hard with no runny yolk, as well as bland with not even a hint of salt. The bacon was burnt, chewy, and had the oddest aftertaste that only allowed me to eat a couple of bites before I was put off by it. The sausage patties were tough, dry, and ‘fake tasting.’ I switched my biscuit for my sister-in-law's English muffin, which was upsetting because the biscuits were the only things that actually tasted good. The English muffin was store-bought, dense, and tasted old.

This was our last meal as a group for my bachelorette party, and it made it end on such a sour note and literally put a bad taste in my mouth.

TL;DR: Don’t go, totally...

As we walked into the restaurant behind a couple that was seated at a table immediately. we were asked how many were in our party. We stated 5. The hostess informed us it would be a 15 minute wait because no tables was available. (A couple came in behind us also.) We were taken out of the restaurant walking pass an empty clean table seating for 6 directly in the middle of the restaurant and seated in the hotel lobby area. Which contained confederate flags and magazines about slavery. We asked the hotel attendant if this was the area everyone was placed to wait for seating to become available and she said yes. So we assumed the other couple left. But not feeling very comfortable we left after waiting 10 minutes. As we exited through the restaurant we saw the couple behind us seated. The same table for 6 was still clean and empty. The hostess says ohh it was going to be your turn shortly. We declined and left. Unfortunately one of our party left her purse in the lobby area and the hostess brought it out carrying as it had a disease. While getting her purse she disclosed that she forgot it trying to hurry out of the establishment, and the hostess tries to explain by saying that the cooks said not to seat anyone else because the tickets were backed up. Hmmmmm..interesting when they sat 4 people at the same time we arrived. Its terrible...

I generally only leave reviews from places that l love. I'm sorry, but I just cannot recommend this place. It was a busy Saturday breakfast with one server and one bartender for the majority of the time we were there. We have both worked in restaurants and definitely understand/accept long wait times. We were patient and good natured during the wait for food.

The quality of the food has me very worried - I ordered the steak n' eggs breakfast (the place seemed busy enough that this wouldn't be a rarely ordered item on the menu) and my steak had the slightly-sweet taste and scent of meat that had just turned bad. The breakfast potatoes were fried in overused/old oil. Both our meals were supposed to come with baked apples as part of the menu description. Over the course of 45 minutes we asked for them 3 times (from our server and the 2nd server that came in towards the end of our meal). We were finally told that they don't have any as they run out early in the day and that's why they never came out with our meal. No offer to adjust our bill, just that's what you get.

We're tourists, so there wasn't a liklihood of our returning anyway, but given the option, we would avoid this place regardless. The staff seems nice enough, so I hope that it turns around...
