Stopped by for dinner on Tuesday around 8pm, no wait! Atmosphere was bright, welcoming, and warm. Everyone in the restaurant greeted us with a smile and welcomed us in, and really let us take our time with the menu. I ordered the Chapattis with beef as they were all sold out of goat (I will be back soon to try the goat!!!), and got a side of chips and hogs breath salsa. Could hardly wait to get home to dig in. The salad on the Chapattis was fresh, tangy and hot. Personally, I have a very low spice tolerance so for those who can’t handle heat: tread lightly! But in no way did the spice overpower the flavor which is an hard art to master that is often lost. The beef was tender, perfectly seasoned, and the lemon on the side was a welcome addition to add a little zing. The house made chips had a light seasoning on them, and the hogs breath was the mild option for salsa with a light roasty toasty tomato flavor. Grand Rapids has a plethora of “fusion” restaurants but I promise you, none of them are doing what they’re doing at Mizizi. I will be back soon...
Read moreWent on a Tuesday around 8:30 PM just one guy working. Wasn’t sure if it is chef Shaw, ordered barria tacos with pork. As well as a rice bean platter with the beef meat only was told that it would take 20 minutes to prepare took a little bit longer than that, no seating really inside except for two tables and 4 stools, picnic tables outside. the consume wasn’t what I expected but I am coming from Texas, more of a broth with some onions, garlic and really didn’t add too much to the tacos. The meat was flavorless maybe salt would’ve helped. I didn’t mention when I asked how the food was and I said that it would’ve been nice to have salt around or some other type of condiments salsa etc. $14 each for both meals. The beans and rice are African seasoned. I will try other options before coming back here. Was down to try new options. Food was prepared. Well just lack flavor and seasoning, In my opinion, thus would’ve been nice to have additional condiments or even s&p to Dr. it up...
Read moreIf you and your friend like spicy food, Mazizi by Street Chef Shaw is a hidden gem in the Creston neighborhood. Latin/East African fusion, but as unpretentious as it gets. Amazing nachos, their chappatis wrap is almost a whole meal in itself, and they deep fry their tacos in chili oil. Seating isn't much of an option, but they are literally next door to Quinn & Tuites and you are welcome to bring in outside food there. It fed me and three friends this past wednesday, and only came out to $53. Open until 11 on weekends. Even if you don't go there tonight, give them a try. It's nice to taste spicy food not watered down to the local dutch palate. This place started as a food truck, and now is in a storefront that reminds me of so many places I’ve seen in Chicago or Brooklyn where there isn’t much to look at on the outside, but walk out with some of the best food you’ve eaten that year. I want thirty more of these restaurants in...
