Parking: Parking is extremely difficult to find, especially if you're used to restaurants with dedicated lots. We eventually found a spot down the street, but it was far from convenient.
Service: You order at the counter, and the food is brought to your table. A tip was requested during checkout, which felt a bit off given the minimal table service. In my opinion, tipping shouldn’t be expected for counter service—especially considering the menu prices. Fair wages should be built into the business model.
Food: We shared the Chick'n Waffle, the Tater Tot & Sausage Hash, and the Biscuits & Gravy. The Chick'n Waffle was decent. However, the Tater Tot Hash was overwhelmingly salty and heavily seasoned, to the point of being unpleasant. The biggest disappointment was the Biscuits & Gravy. As someone from the South, I have certain expectations, and unfortunately, this dish didn’t meet them. The gravy had seasoning more reminiscent of Indian cuisine, and the biscuits themselves were subpar. If you’re looking for traditional Southern-style biscuits and gravy, this isn't it.
Price: A bit on the expensive side, especially considering the portion sizes and self-service format.
Overall: While I doubt I’ll return, I still encourage you to try it at least once—especially if you're curious about their unique take on brunch. Just go in with the right...
Read moreI want to preface my review by saying that I do not have any strict dietary restrictions. I do eat meat, I’m simply trying to eat less of it for moral and environmental reasons. So that’s the perspective my review is coming from.
My family came out for brunch today. We tried a little bit of everything. I can only personally attest to the tofu-based chick’n and waffles and the buffalo tots. The chick’n was very solid. The tofu didn’t exactly give chick’n texture but it was still a good texture. The crunchy outer layer had a great blend of herbs and spices that I think stack up to a good fried chicken joint. The GF waffles weren’t my favorite, but I also didn’t hate them. They were acceptable on their own, and a good companion to the chicken. The buffalo tots were amazing. I wouldn’t do anything differently with them.
The staff was warm and friendly. The atmosphere was warm, vibrant, and modern. Street parking might be a bit of a chore depending on the day, but if you’re new to the Creston neighborhood, there is a free city lot just down the street.
Enjoyed our time at FIKA and we...
Read moreThis place is new from when I was in GR in March so I had high hopes, especially since they are a sister restaurant to Rise Authentic Baking which I love. It is a beautiful bright space. Order at the register and then they bring the food to you. They had some imaginative and also traditional vegan breakfast and brunch items. I had the tofu scramble with breakfast potatoes. Or actually it was more potatoes than tofu scramble. It was not very flavorful and for 18.50, and was definitely not worth the price. My husband had the avocado toast and it was just okay. Nothing special really besides avocado on bread with a few tomatoes.
My main issue was that they were charging Washington DC prices in crunchy Creston neighborhood of Grand Rapids. We still ate there because we are used to the prices, it just took away from the charm of the area, imo. And honestly, there are vegan other places that charge less where you get more food in GR. Overall, we probably will not return unless it's a last minute need. Since they are newer, I hope they take this as...
