RED BOWL — Restaurant in Grand Rapids

I’ve been a loyal customer for four years. I’ve told my friends and family about this place, how good the food is, how I haven’t had any issues with cross contamination, hairs in the food, anything. I’ve raved about this place to everyone I know, recommended it to patients even. So imagine my surprise tonight when my boyfriend places a DoorDash order for our usual - sweet and sour chicken, and general tso’s chicken, and his sweet and sour is raw, and my general tso’s chicken is general tso’s SHRIMP. I have a SEVERE shellfish allergy (among others). I’ll have you know the average cost of a 2 pack of epi pens is around $600. So I bite into this heavily breaded piece of chicken and it doesn’t taste right. It’s firmer than the rest of the chicken. I held it up to the light. What’s there but a SHRIMP TAIL. To add insult to injury, there was a small, long, piece of plastic fried into the same piece. So not only did you serve my boyfriend raw chicken, you’ve given me an allergic reaction, and served contaminated food. You should be ashamed of yourselves. We will never order from here again. First time customer. I placed an online order for pickup through their website directly. I ordered General Tao’s chicken with fried rice and crab rangoon for my combo. Special instructions: chicken fried extra crispy and extra sauce. I also added 1 egg roll. When I arrived there were at least 5 staff members at the front desk, however none of them greeted me or asked if I was picking up or needed to place an order. Although my container was filled to the brim, the “fried” rice was very pale yellow, mushy, flavorless rice with no vegetables. It literally tasted like white rice, but had a really light yellow color to it. My special request for the chicken to be fried extra crispy was not fulfilled and there were no vegetables in my chicken either. Bad customer service and...

I am always in the mood for Chinese takeout. Red Bowl is pretty good. Have ordered takeout from here 3 or so times within the past year. Here are my takeaways: orange chicken is solid - good meat to breading ratio and has a good flavor with a bit of spice. Sesame chicken has great flavor, not too sweet. Fried rice isn't my favorite - I like the larger chunks of onion but there is a bit of old pan flavor to the rice, if that makes sense... I typically opt for white rice but the fried isn't the worst I've had. Rangoon is above average comparatively for GR - good amount of crab cheese filling and the flavor is great. Overall, 4 stars.
