Tasty Gyro & Coney Island — Restaurant in Grand Rapids

I stopped in for lunch takeout last minute, when I had a craving for chicken shawarma salad. I have to eat gluten free and there are plenty of options here. I would say the restaurant has "gluten sensitive" options, because meat is prepared on the same grill as everything else, The plates, platters, salads, and other options are prepared from the same buffet line. This is a food preparation buffet line, similar to Subway, and not a public food buffet. The serving staff were very polite, kind, and friendly. They helped me prepare a meal according to my gluten allergy. From what I saw, the very slight chance of exposure was low and wouldn't be an issue for me. The chicken shawarma salad was absolutely delicious and I highly recommend it. All of the lettuce, pickled turnips, onions, olives, dressings, and garlic sauce were very fresh. The salad and toppings were cold, while the chicken shawarma was hot. The salad was very flavorful with a great mix of options. If you're a fan of the Pita House and Sami's Gyros you're in luck! This establishment is owned and run by Sami himself with his lovely wife. I've been to all of the locations over the years since I first moved to GR and the food is always delicious. It was such a treat meeting and talking with this couple only to find out that theirs was the first Greek restaurant I ever ate at. They we're so pleasant and accommodating. My three boys and I enjoyed both the food and conversations. It's always a relief to eat at a place where children are welcome. This location has the traditional menu you'd expect plus some standard American fare for the less adventurous. I had the traditional gyro, my boys the hot dogs and hamburgers. The food is phenomenal and the older gentleman and his son are very friendly but today I took my girlfriend here ( I’ve been really talking this place up ) and my girlfriends ordered was accidentally messed up, which happens so that didn’t bother us. But the lady with dreads cooking the food and taking orders was so rude to her coworkers and the guests that I actually couldn’t believe it was actually happening. We both are in the restaurant industry and we were completely shocked that guests would be spoken to the way they were. It was absolutely disgusting. I continued to listen to her speak to the guests how she was while we were waiting for my girlfriends food and it actually made me lose my appetite.
