The Candied Yam Delightful Southern Cuisine (44th Street) — Restaurant in Grand Rapids

I walk in today to get the $5 dinner deal for the first time ..and a lady greets me and ask me if I’m here for pick -up .. I said “no Iam here for the $5 special I saw online ” (end of the day leftover food).. she tells me what they have left for the day and I put my order in and she starts boxing it up.. I start to order my second dinner and thats when the chaos started . ..a lady from the back comes and starts trying to ring me up before I can finish my second order with the lady serving me .. then she rings it up for $20 something .. i then said” I don’t think that’s adding up right I ordered the $5 meals” .. she then gets flustered/angry and says” what time is it ??”(deal starts at 630 it was 640ish) to the serving lady.. serving lady then tells her the time …she then looks at me and says “you need to speak up and say something we ain’t going to give you that deal unless you say something “ .. I then look at the serving lady that just boxed my first meal up and she knew about the deal special bc we just spoke ..i then say to the lady serving “can I please get Mac and cheese with that second one” .. lady from the back continues to ring me up .. very unprofessional experience .. Anyways me and other family members spend money here and I’ll tell them about this… i use to really enjoy the food ..honestly even for how cheap the leftover food was today it truly effected the way it tasted because of the experience .. not made and served with love … Me and my whole family will take our business to...

If you're looking for a Soulfood treat or Feast have I got the place for you!! The Candied Yam has become my new favorite place to get absolutely delicious authentic tasting soul food😋 if I could rate this place a 10 I would it is absolutely that delicious you can find just about everything there authentic homemade Cornbread dressing, yams Fried Chicken, greens, Black Eyed Peas, smothered pork chops and some of the best fried catfish I have ever had along with many other delicious items to choose from and their dessert menu delicious from banana pudding, peach cobbler and my favorite pound cake you can find a little bit of everything there truly a piece of soul food to feed your soul. Don't get me started about the Cornbread there Special recipe for cornbread muffins are absolutely delicious truly melt-in-your-mouth not those Jiffy Mix knock-offs that you find everywhere these days. This place is so delicious I have been there three days in a row which is unheard of and crazy for me because honey I can cook😛 but for those days when you don't feel like cooking or you just want that special taste this is definitely the place for you!👍 but don't take my word for it try it out yourself and let me know...

Service was great. Very friendly and personable. 4 Stars for that.

Seating was cafeteria style pick-nick benches, but it wasn't bad.

Food was disappointing for the most part. Catfish was good; very large fillets and cooked perfect but that's where it ended. The mac and Cheese seemed old and had a lot of oil in it; A LOT. I had one bite. Mashed Potatoes were made from real potatoes but the gravy was...odd. Didn't care for it much but I did eat them. The deep fried pork chop was a real let down. It looked like a pig ear I buy for my dog at the pet store and it tasted worse than it looked. I threw it in the garbage after 1 bite.

No drinks available other than tea or lemonade. Not sure if they ran out or if they just don't offer anything else.

To me, everything seemed very cheap; from the food to the Styrofoam container and plastic ware to the Gordon Foods-type tarter sauce packets. The only thing that wasn't cheap was the bill. Pretty disappointed as I was really hoping for something spectacular. Doubtful that I will give it another shot. Maybe in a year or 2 if they are still open, although I can't imagine they will be if this...
