I was so excited when I found out there will be an authentic Thai restaurant opening in GR. Today was my third time I went to the restaurant and it will be last time for me.
I dined in today around 2 pm by myself. They were not very busy. The owner greeted me and asked me if I would like any drinks and he suggest lemon Thai tea. I hadn’t look at the menu and did not ask for the price. I ordered Pad Thai with shrimp and fried calamari. The food was served pretty fast. When the bill came, I noticed there was no tea on the receipt. I mentioned it to the server and she added it on and I was super surprised with the price. It was $8.00 and it was not even a full glass. I asked the server to verify if it’s the right price since it’s only one glass. And the owner came to talk to me. I verified with him if it was the correct price and he said yes. I told him it was a bit much for a glass of tea. He said it was not on the menu yet and he asked me how much do I think he should charge. I said I don’t know maybe $2-3 range. He said he can’t do that, he said the loose tea bag costs $6. I mentioned it to him some restaurants charge only $8 range for a glass of wine. And I left it at that.
I was doing some research and found out it costs about $4 for Thai tea in NY and by law the restaurant can’t charge the customer if the item is not listed on the menu.
I like to support a local restaurant even though their price is higher than big cities like Chicago or NY. The first time I tried their Pad Thai, I think it tasted exactly like one in Bangkok. But today Pad Thai doesn’t taste the same. It is more Americanized which it is understandable. And I am really glad they are here since I can’t afford to fly back home very often. Today I had diffferent experience. It is a principle that is not quite right. I know I didn’t ask about the price but he should mention it since it’s not on the menu.
I would like to update my post after the owner responded to my review on 05/13/2025. Please see below:
Excel in running a restaurant is not easy. I understand you were not happy that I shared my experience to the public. You said and I quote “it’s very hard to get a good review these days, I wish you came to me instead of putting a review”, but then continued to respond to the issue by insulting the customer, really?
Just to be clear, I am the one who informed the server that I didn’t get charged for the tea. I spent almost $40 on lunch for one person (myself). In total I ordered Pad Thai 3 times for $21 each, which is higher than the average price you would pay in big cities like Chicago and NY. The fact I was willing to purchase this dish on multiple occasions should tell you that the pricing was not a “budget” issue, and you should refrain from insinuating that I am being cheap. That is both...
Read moreItems ordered: crab Rangoon, summer lovin’ rolls (shrimp), Thai table wings, spicy basil fried rice w/ chicken, pineapple fried rice w/ chicken (x2) My partner and I ordered takeout from here for the first time tonight, and it was unfortunately a bit of a letdown, especially since it’s so close to our home. On the more objective end, the summer lovin’ rolls we received were filled with tofu instead of shrimp (I even double checked to make sure it wasn’t my mistake), which was disappointing but not the end of the world. I wish I had a picture to show this, but the wings we received were partially delicious, partially a joke. The 3 fill-size wings were great, and the Thai chili sauce was yummy. However, the 2 other wings were around 1/4 the size of the others and were more like mini hot wings, and so were also overdone because of the size difference. It was…confusing even opening the box. Again, the full size ones were great but feels kinda like I got cheated. More on the subjective side, my partner and I just did not enjoy our fried rice dishes much and found they a bit bland. I got the medium (3) in the spicy basil fried rice and worried that it might be a little too spicy (based off Rak Thai’s scale) but there was hardly any spice, and it turned out rather bland. You definitely get a lot of food in the fried rice dish but…we didn’t really want much of it. The crab rangoons were light and crispy and good, and the summer rolls were fairly good, even with the wrong protein, and the wings that were the correct size were good, but with the multiple mistakes and the lack of flavor, I’m not sure we’ll...
Read more10 Stars aren't even close to enough! For the love of all things Thai, this restaurant is LEGIT! I've been anxiously awaiting my first visit to Thai Table, and from the very first bite I was ecstatic, elated, and overjoyed. Every other Thai restaurant in the area has Americanized their Thai food, but Thai Table hasn't: theirs is the real deal. The nuances, complexities, and subtleties of the flavors of Thai cuisine are unmatched by any other world cuisine. Thai is my favorite cuisine without a close second - we seek out Thai cuisine whenever we travel.......always hoping for an authentic, not Americanized, experience. We ordered six different things from the menu, and Thai Table nailed every single one. I almost cried after the first bite - I was FINALLY taken back to authentic Thailand cuisine without going to Thailand or a much bigger American city. It's about time, Grand Rapids! Eak and MiMi are quintessential Thai hosts: Extremely friendly, welcoming, gracious, and absolutely delightful. This restaurant has been open only one month, and they're doing so many things right. Run, don't walk, to Thai Table if you want an EXCELLENT, authentic, Thai dining experience. And please be kind - Can you imagine moving 8000 miles away from home, to a VERY different culture, learning a VERY difficult new language, and navigating all things involved in opening a restaurant??? Eak and Mimi are the nicest, sweetest people. My hope is that they see the kindness in Americans and we do everything we can to help them...
