I work in Greenfield down the street from Catalpa and come regularly and generally always order the same drink which is two shots of espresso over ice. It always comes in the smaller, clear, iced beverage cup. Ordered same drink today and they served it to me in the tiniest, white cup with 3 ice cubes (the micro cup meant for hot espresso shots). I asked why and the barista said that's their policy - that if I want to add oat milk or cream to my iced espresso quote "they have to put it in that cup". This is absurd, I just wanted espresso over ice with a splash of oat milk in it (not a latte) The baristas were super rude and completely disinterested in proper customer service from the gate.
I left actually shocked at how unreal and off putting the entire experience was. Both baristas working were talking to one another, never smiled once or acted remotely engaged - my espresso sat pulled on the espresso machine for 5 minutes while one ate behind the counter and the other one chatted with the barista that was eating. Who owns this place? It's pretty bewildering how poorly the customer service has been the last several times I've been there and this experience solidified that I will never be coming back.
Side note - In a former life, I worked at a very busy, popular coffee shop as a barista for a handful of years. Our staff rocked and the owner was incredible and this type of service and behavior would NEVER have flown there. Is bad customer service just a sign of the...
Read moreBe warned that the creamers on the counter are not for customers who have purchased the most expensive drinks on the menu, like lattes that, as others have noted, are made too strong for most. If you add a little milk to your latte from the pitchers on the counter you will be accused of not paying $1 more for a larger drink. I was shocked since most cafés base the cost of their drinks on the number of shots of espresso.
Being told that if using the milk on the counter is equivalent to "getting a larger drink" is an interesting hill to lose a customer on.
Even when you use your own cup (which is better for our planet, earning you a discount at many shops) expect obvious judgement and side-eye and if you modify your drink with the fixings they have out.
(To be clear, I am NOT talking about purchasing just the espresso and filling the cup up with milk, which, I agree, is shady.)
My family has loved coming here because the drinks and pastries are killer, but nothing can replace being treated with kindness and fairness, and sadly, Catalpa has a lot of room to grow and has lost...
Read moreSince new ownership has taken over the quality of the product has gone down. I only get a latte when the last remaining person from old ownership is there. The old owners took the time to train the baristas, now someone starts and within days they are making watery, high priced lattes. Willing to pay the price for a quality product. You can tell the difference when you pick up your cup and that’s just sad. The beauty of the shop was the care of the product. Now sped trumps quality. Had been going to this shop daily since it opened. With new ownership, I go about once a month. I make my coffee at home now. Hope the new owners read this and take it to heart. I know I am not the only regular who now is not so regular! I would love to come back but the quality does not warrant the price! And sadly this town does not have an alternative. If I wanted a substandard latte I would be going to other independent coffee shop in town. Oh wait, the other shop bought...
