Wow. My family has been in Greensboro since 2001. My father lives on Walker and frequents the bars on the corner of Walker and Elam regularly. I've frequented these locales for years, as well.
That said, Walker's has always given me a strange vibe, and last night I experienced exactly why I don't go there.
My friends and I walked in to meet a friend, and were both told in unsubtle terms to "get out" by a particularly rude customer - it wouldn't have been a big deal if perhaps the bartender working would have said something, but there was silence and my friend visiting from out of town felt completely uncomfortable and judged for absolutely no reason. I myself used the restroom and was told by the customer to "get to stepping".
The bar says "Members Only" - I frequent Westerwood Tavern (which also has this members only thing), yet I've never felt like I don't belong there, and I'm always welcome to stay... Because the members only thing is silly and archaic unless you want to exclude people. Yet, the customers/employee at Walkers apparently take this silly action WAY to seriously.
Don't go to Walker's unless you know people who go/work there - apparently you will be chastised for not being a local by...
Read moreLocated as the centerpiece of the three best bars not located in downtown Greensboro, all locked together like disfunctional conjoined twins on the corner of the intersection of Elam Ave. and Walker Ave. this is another great watering hole for people who want to be where everybody knows your name (whether you like it or not). But it is like its own little city within the city and the patrons and local residents are like on big family and it is a place that I feel at home in. So if you feel like you are a square peg trying to find into a round hole out there in the other nightlife and social haunts out in the city of lights, ce join us scalawags over here in the corner of misfit toys.
