Location: Shogun Time: 5:35PM
I entered the building looking to just get my ridiculous Sushi craving I been feeling all week outta the way. I'm not new to Shogun. But as the first of my official "Restaurant Reviews". With my first stab at being a food critic. Hoping to transition from the rewarding but straining atmosphere of being a Chef. To traveling restaurants all over the world , laying back. Chilling with good food and drinks. And having great service. Shogun (at the moment) is my favorite restaurant right now. So I had to make it my first. Let's begin.
-Items Ordered:
Tuna Dumplings -$11.00 Spicy Tuna Roll - $6.50 Volcano Roll - $11.95 Fried Rice - $2.00 Fried Tempura Icecream - $4.95
Service: Server was very pleasant. Conversed about how clean I thought the Sushi Bar looked. The kitchen staff and the chef really do seem to take pride in their plate. For the most part, my plates so far evertyime have been spectacular. Well plated. Clean. Was very attentive to my water. Which is something I think most servers forget about sometimes. Very comfortable service.
-Items Experienced:
Tuna Dumplings (Appetizer) - A dish of tuna fried in a light breading. Dumplings s was lightly fried a lovely golden brown. Fried perfectly. Tuna had a fresh, clean taste. Lots and lots of flavor. Didn't taste old in the slightest. Accompanied by avocado underneath, topped with drizzle of a red spicy sauce and also what seems to be a sweet soy based sauce as well. This had a very nice texture as well. Nice little start to my meal.
Spicy Tuna Roll - I'm no stranger to a good Spicy Tuna Roll. This is my 3rd time having their verision of the classic Spicy Tuna Roll. Everytime I have ordered it. It has been extremely delicious. This experience has been no different. Their Tuna Roll just tastes very flavorful. I swear it has some little fried pieces in it. Maye fried pieces of rice? Lightly fried to give it a slight crunch. Or am I tripping. Anyways onto the next item.
Volcano Roll - This by far was the best item on the menu. This appeared to be slices of crab. In a mix of a tasty spicy red. With some sweetness. Not too spicy. Sprinkled with small bits of Wasabi. Accompanied by the standard ginger and Wasabi. Not only was this the best item out of my meal. This was one of the best dishes I have ever eaten in an while. The taste was so good that I had to eat it slowly. And enjoy my meal. Savor the flavor. Closes my eyes. I'm an actual professionally paid Chef myself. It's very rare for a dish to make me feel this way. But that justnmeans the dish was simply amazing. A dish full of Umami. I will get again.
Fried Rice (Side Dish) - Your standard Japanese fried rice you will find out most restaurants. This style is very light. Cooked perfectly with a nice little chew to it. With bits of egg here and there. One of my favorite things to order. Fried rice is a simple dish in itself. But cooked well and it can be enjoyed almost as much as a really good entrée.
Tempura Fried Icecream (Dessert) - This is my 2nd time getting this. It was delicious just like my first time trying it. A nice little ball of Green Tea Icecream fried in what I think is a slightly sweet Tempura mixture. Forming a nice little barrier of crust around the icecream. The icecream itself has a nice texture with some chew to it. The breading has a even better texture to it. With some chew to it. Topped with whipped cream and drizzle of fudge. Very delicious.
Summary: Overall yet another great visit to Shogun. I'm always blown away by clean, nice and professional their plating looks. I can even look by the sushi bar and see it is in clean, tip top shape. I can see the cooks make their food with love. As a Chef seeing that usually makes my experience even better. I'm very pleased. With come again. I'm basically one of their...
Read moreNever have I ever been so upset with a dining experience in all my life. First off I ordered a Mt dew to drink and when I finally got it it didn't taste right so I ordered a different drink.. I thought ok no big deal it's just a drink. Then I ordered a filet and chicken hibatichi dinner which was more than $25 and I ordered my steak rare with fried rice. My dinner came out and the steak was not a filet and it was well done. The rice was not fried at all and had a weird taste. I literally only took one bite before I requested politely that it be fixed or if I can get something else. The waitress said she'll be right back and in walks what I think was the manager. She told me the steak was filet and that I was crazy because no one else was complaining about the rice. And I said ok maybe I just don't like it so I politely asked if I could get a steak with the proper cook on it. And she said ok. Not 5 minutes later the cook came in and very rudely told me to not complain about his rice. That he cooks it just fine and no one else was complaining so I was being ridiculous. I was literally in tears. They did all of this in front of my children. I have never felt so disrespected at a restaurant where I'm paying for a decent meal. The service was terrible. The waitresses had no idea what was on the menu and to top it all off it is my birthday! Screw this place. How rude and disrespectful. Will never go here again and I do NOT recommend anyone else try. The food I did eat was not good. The only thing I liked was the salad... And I love Japanese food. Just terrible. If I could give a negative star I would. Happy...
Read moreI had a wonderful experience sitting at the sushi bar. Carolyn, whom I hear is the best server in town, lived up to her reputation… And Charlie’s wit and delicious food sealed the five star deal. I had a shrimp and avocado tempura roll, and Gyoza.
2-24-2025: enjoying a light lunch of seared tuna and gyoza. Sushi bar is a nice place to sit if u r solo. Tyler a good
3-11-25: excellent again… I got the tempura bento box and it was more than I could eat. Had about six or seven different things in it. My family got the sushi rolls. And the seared tuna was outstanding. Highly recommend this for an affordable lunch.
5-18-25: I was underwhelmed today. Noel was a great server very personable and I got the lunch teriyaki style chicken and rice fried. And basically the chicken seemed like it was pre-cooked (unseasoned) and then cooked again (unseasoned) with my rice which turned out to be more like sticky rice instead of fried rice. and the chicken when you cut it had no juiciness at all it was just like twice cooked chicken bits. But there was a lot of it and the rice was good and I guess if you take it home you can dress it up a little bit in your own way to make it taste better. But the Gyoza was perfect and my brother loved his sushi roll. The place is very popular and I will go again it's my brother's favorite place. And he is a good cook. This was just once out of 20 times I've been when I truly enjoyed it. And in full disclosure they did discount my bill some for an order...
