[Update as of July 2022] We've eaten here over a dozen times since Spring 2021 and have the following updated observations: Victor is our preferred server. He is attentive, friendly, and fast. Victor takes excellent care of his tables. Ask to be seated in Victor's section and you won't be disappointed. The pork at this place is delicious; fajitas, burrito, enchiladas... Try the pork. You won't be sorry. The tortilla soup is outstanding! The broth is packed with flavor, the chicken is tasty and tender, the tortilla strips plentiful, and the presentation is gorgeous. Don't be startled by the portion size — HUGE — because the leftovers reheat beautifully. It's also worth mentioning that our opinion of the margaritas has changed a bit. It helps if you ask for the gold (or top shelf) margarita. And don't forget to ask for the hot salsa/sauce. Mix it into the table salsa or spoon it onto your entree to kick the heat up a notch. I even add it to my soup. Overall, over the past year, we have come to enjoy Rancho Viejo for their service (thanks, Victor!) their food, and the cleanliness of the place. We'll keep coming back. ------- [original review] The chips are somewhat stale here, but they have a spicy hot sauce (if you ask for it) that is so hot and smoky that we didn't even care about the chips. Since moving from south Texas we have really missed spicy salsa. I'm so glad we asked. The Grand Fajitas (with shrimp, chicken, and beef) were full of delicious veggies and the portion was so large that I couldn't eat even half of what was brought to me. My margarita was marginal, but the same is true for all of the other margaritas I've had since moving away from south Texas. The place is showing its age, but it's clean and the people are friendly. We prefer well-worn hole-in-the-wall restaurants, and we were very comfortable at this one.

Average Mexican restaurant. The chips were fresh and warm. The hot salsa was the better of the two they offer. The two meals we had were the Pollo Durango and the Carne Asada. My wife started on the Pollo Durango and after a few bites said, there was no cheese sauce on the Pollo Durango (a mixture of grilled chicken and mushrooms that is supposed to be covered with cheese sauce.) We flagged down the waiter and showed him the problem. His comment was the cheese sauce was on the bottom. Sorry Fernando, but there was no freakin’ cheese sauce on the plate anywhere. This was a screw up in the kitchen. I could see this was not going to be resolved and it wasn’t worth the hassle. The meal still tasted good. With the carne asada I had a chili toreado. The carne asada was the typical two thin slices of beef. It had a good taste and not tough. Both meals came with large servings of rice and beans. The food was delivered to the table within minutes of us placing our order. It is a large, and tightly packed with tables and booths restaurant. The dining area appears to be clean; however, the Yelp health score rating for the kitchen is not exactly stellar. Nothing really stood out here and the kitchen’s screw up disappointed us. If you are looking for other Mexican restaurants in the area, check out my reviews in my collection "Jalapeno Highway" on Yelp. I've probably been there.

Saddest tacos. Saddest service. Saddest order. Saddest "Mexican" food I ever had in my life. This is the 3rd time I ordered take out from them with more disappointment each time. This is a photo of their "carne asada tacos" flour tortillas, beef only, no toppings and zero flavor. They were inedible. We ordered shredded beef wet burritos and got ground beef ONLY burritos, also inedible. So dry, no flavor whatsoever. The rest of our order was not right either after explaining 3x what we wanted. Salsa was similar to marinara sauce, no flavor, no spice. I'm very sad we spent $40 on this and to be greeted with horribly rude service. I don't ever write bad reviews, but this is not okay. I would maybe feed this to a dog, not humans. Clearly no spice or love put into our order. Very disappointed. I won't be going back again.
