Metropol Restaurant has been a cherished part of my visits to Puerto Rico for the past 15 years, located conveniently in the heart of Guaynabo city. It has consistently been a place I could rely on for authentic flavors and great dining experiences. Unfortunately, my most recent visit left me disappointed and concerned that this beloved establishment might be heading in the wrong direction.
As always, I was greeted warmly, and the table service was attentive, maintaining the friendly and welcoming atmosphere Metropol is known for. However, the issues arose with the food itself—its quality, presentation, and flavor left much to be desired.
To start, I was served a reheated pastel, which immediately took away the freshness I had come to expect. The pernil was disappointingly dry, the morcilla lacked any discernible flavor, and the mofongo was excessively oily. The only redeeming element on my plate was the rice, which thankfully retained its usual quality. Adding to the disappointment, I requested garlic bread—a staple in the past—only to be told that it’s no longer available, not even for an extra charge.
While the ambiance and service from the waitress were good, these positives were not enough to overshadow the letdown from the food. Metropol has always been a place of consistent excellence for me, but this experience hindered my visit and has left me hoping they return to the high standards they’ve upheld for years.
I genuinely hope this was just an off day for Metropol, as I’d love to continue making it a staple of my Puerto Rican travels. However, my latest experience has...
Read moreMetropol in Guaynabo is a great spot for Caribbean and Puerto Rican home-style food. Their mofongo is solid, and they have a good beer selection to go with it.
Parking can be a little tough since there are limited spaces, so you might need to park in the Walgreens lot nearby. One thing to keep in mind—there’s not a lot of space to wait for a table inside, so when it gets busy, the line spills out onto the sidewalk, which can be a bit uncomfortable, especially on a crowded night.
I went on a weekend night, and while it was busy, the wait for a table for four was less than 15 minutes, which wasn’t bad. They brought out the kids' food quickly, which was really appreciated. Adult meals took a little longer, but given how packed the place was, it was understandable.
The drinks were great, especially the Piña Colada and Moscow Mule, and service was attentive, with our server keeping waters topped off and checking in regularly.
Overall, it’s a great place for Puerto Rican comfort food with solid service, just be prepared for potential parking challenges and a bit of a wait outside during peak hours. Would...
Read moreThis is my favorite restaurant in Puerto Rico so far. The Kan Kan Chuleta (Pork Chop) was insanely good and huge. My wife and friend had the Churasco steak with Chimi sauce and it was amazing. It was the softest steak I have ever eaten. The rice and beans were on point, the service was phenomenal. The appetizers were amazing. Absolutely amazing. We had the Bacalitos, Acapurrias, Pastelitos (Empanadas) and the cheese balls for the kids on separate visits. The Bacalitos lasted three minutes at the table. My kids ran to eat them before us. We had our appetizers in ten to fifteen minutes and our main meals within ten minutes after.
We knew this was a good spot when we noticed there were little to no tourists and mainly locals. We got ripped off big time at Old San Juan. The food in Condado was good, but not great. Especially, the seafood. It was a huge miss at Condado beach and Old San Juan. Absolutely horrible. Barely edible. The food here at Metropol is the standard of what Puerto Rican food is expected to taste like.
I highly recommend this spot. Even the locals rant and rave about...
